FreePrints photo printing service comes to Windows Phone 8

Cal Morell FreePrints Windows Phone at Casual Connect

Casual Connect is an event dedicated to casual videogames, but you?ll often run into more than just game developers and PR people. One such attendee was Cal Morrell of Avenquest Software and Photo Affections. They?ve created a remarkable photo printing app for Windows Phone 8 that photography fans (especially Lumia 1020 owners) are going to love called FreePrints.

We sat down with Cal, who walked us through FreePrints? features and the process of optimizing the app for Windows Phone 8. Note that this app is currently available only in the United States, but we do have good news for international users (and our hands on video footage) after the break!

From your phone to reality

FreePrints is a free Windows Phone 8 app that allows you to select photographs from a variety of sources and then have them professionally printed and shipped to your door.

The first time you use the app you?ll go through a quick tutorial that explains how the app works. Then it?s time to set up your account and start linking your various picture hosting accounts to the app.

FreePrints can edit and print images from a wide variety of sources:

  • Your Windows Phone
  • Dropbox
  • Facebook
  • Flickr
  • Instagram
  • Picasa
  • SkyDrive

The beautiful thing about this app is that you can combine images from all of those places into a single order. Just select the photos you want from a source, press Back on your phone, and then select another source to keep adding pictures to the order. Wherever you are in the app, you?ll see the total number of pictures in your shopping cart at the top-right corner of the screen.

Ordering process

FreePrints for Windows Phone 8

After choosing the pictures you?d like to have printed, FreePrints gives you the option to crop and rotate the individual images. Users can select from numerous print sizes: 4 x 6 inches, 5 x 5 (Instagram ratio), 8 x 10, and many more, all the way up to 20 x 30.

Once you?ve got your order lined up, you can choose between standard shipping (5-13 days) and expedited (4-6 days). The FreePrints app accepts credit cards and PayPal as payment.

Your photographs will arrive by mail shortly thereafter. Photo Affections is a reputable printing service and the pictures they deliver will be of the highest quality, not the rush jobs you?d get from a one-hour printing place. They won?t fade and will last for years when stored in an acid-free album.

Free prints for a year!

FreePrints for Windows Phone 8

To promote the FreePrints service, all users get 85 free 4 x 6 prints per month.? Your free prints must be unique ? you can?t print the same image twice for free. You?ll only pay for shipping, and the FreePrints shipping prices are actually lower than what Photo Affections charges on their website.

Users can also earn extra free prints by sharing the app with their friends or posting about it on Facebook and Twitter. In fact, you can sign up with my invite code pacevedo1 to hook me up with a free print. Why not, right?

Get it now (or soon)

Avenquest has worked closely with Microsoft to optimize FreePrints for Windows Phone 8. If you want physical prints of your photos, this app has a lot to offer. It?s currently available only in the US, but will launch in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany soon as well. Hopefully more countries will follow!

Canada draws up directive on beacons in 787 fire investigation

Sat Aug 3, 2013 3:27pm EDT

(Reuters) - Canada's air transport regulator is drawing up a safety directive concerning the emergency beacons at the center of an investigation into a fire on a parked Boeing 787 Dreamliner last month, it said on Saturday.

The directive - which would list action that airlines or manufacturers must take - will take into account inspections done by manufacturer Honeywell International and its Canadian sub-contractor Instrumar Ltd, Transport Canada said in a statement.

"Transport Canada is developing an airworthiness directive in consultation with the FAA (U.S. Federal Aviation Administration) and EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency)," the statement said.

"The airworthiness directive would be based on the information collected from the equipment inspections mandated by the FAA, information already provided by Honeywell, and the results of (Transport Canada's) inspections of Honeywell and Instrumar."

Emergency Locator Transmitters - designed to help locate an aircraft in the event of a crash - marketed by Honeywell have emerged as a key focus of the investigation into a blaze which caused serious damage to a parked 787 jet owned by Ethiopian Airlines at London's Heathrow airport on July 12.

The FAA has ordered inspections on the beacons in 787s, and Boeing last week expanded the inspections to cover more than 1,000 aircraft of all types that are fitted with the devices.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the Canadian directive would expand inspections to cover all types of planes that use the suspect emergency transmitters, including jets from Boeing, Europe's Airbus and Dassault Aviation.

Although the 787 is designed and manufactured in the United States, Transport Canada is the lead safety agency on the beacons, which are manufactured in Newfoundland.

An earlier model of Honeywell beacon faced scrutiny from Canada's regulator in a previous airworthiness directive in 2009.

It called for suspect parts to be modified or replaced after tests found that two units were unable to broadcast the emergency homing signal on the right frequency.

Oil patch city wants to be known as 'Boomtown USA'

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) ? The city in the heart of western North Dakota's booming oil patch has a new brand ? "Boomtown USA."

The Williston Convention and Visitor's Bureau unveiled the theme on Thursday.

"As our community is expanding and becoming unlike anything it has ever been before, the Williston CVB must also grow and boldly embrace who we are, what we stand for and truly define our own future," said Amy Krueger, the bureau's executive director.

"This new direction does all that and more as it defines Williston in the eyes of tourists and visitors and lays a foundation for the family fun, historic and outdoor aspects of life in Williston," she said.

The city has some of its earliest roots as a boomtown, when the fur trading business exploded in 1828. That also is the year when Fort Union opened its doors. It was a fur-trading post along the Missouri River in northwestern North Dakota for much of the 19th century, and now is a national historic site.

The oil boom and its promise of jobs has drawn people from around the country to Williston. The U.S. Census bureau estimates that the city's population has grown from 14,700 in 2010 to 26,700, and a city-sponsored study done by North Dakota State University concluded that the number could be as high as 33,000.

The NDSU study also concluded that Williston's population could reach 44,000 by 2017.

The Census Bureau says Williston is the fastest-growing area with a population of 10,000 to 49,999 residents in the U.S.

Controversial Golf Project in Croatia's Dubrovnik Cleared by Authorities

Critics have raised environmental concerns over the development on a site, and also said that the modern project is incompatible with the architecture of the city, a UNESCO world heritage site.

The project, backed by Australian former world number one golfer Greg Norman, aims to build two golf courses, two hotels, 240 villas and 400 apartments on 310 hectares (766 acres) of the land.

"A total of 16 city councillors of the 24 present during Tuesday's vote backed the project," city council spokeswoman Kristina Civalo told AFP of the vote on Tuesday evening.

Construction on the project -- the brainchild of Israeli businessman Aaron Frenkel -- could begin later this year.

Those supporting the scheme say it will result in the creation of local jobs and provide a boost to the tourism industry.

Norman, who won two Majors, is to open a golf academy at the project site, local media reported.

Some 100 protestors had gathered outside Dubrovnik's city hall to voice their opposition and carried banners which read "Srdj is ours" in reference to the name of the land where the complex will be built.

The newest member of the European Union, Croatia hosts more than 11 million tourists yearly, almost triple of its population of 4.2 million.

Dubrovnik is visited by some 700,000 tourists every year.

Real Estate Down Slightly During The Second Quarter | Marotta On ...

Real Estate during 2Q 2013

Real Estate Stocks are an important part of the category of Resource Stocks, sometimes called ?Hard Asset? Stocks. They were down slightly in the second quarter of 2013. Foreign real estate was down more for the quarter because the U.S. Dollar strengthened against foreign currencies.

  • Vanguard REIT ETF (VNQ) was down 1.6% during the second quarter, but still up 9.08% for the past year and still averaging 8.11% for the last 5 years.
  • Vanguard Global ex-U.S. Real Estate ETF (VNQI) was down 6.72% during the second quarter, but still averaging 18.29% for the past year.

We still recommend a healthy allocation to publicly traded real estate investment trusts.
