China's school bus donation to Macedonia derided (AP)

BEIJING ? China's donation of school buses to tiny Macedonia has touched off derision online, where Chinese have called the gift ill-considered given their country's poor safety record and a recent crash that killed 19 preschoolers.

The Chinese government's gift of 23 buses was made Friday at a ceremony in Macedonia's capital.

The Macedonian government said in a statement on its website that each bus has 35 seats, meets all safety requirements and will be used for students primarily in rural areas. An accompanying photo showed three yellow buses with the red-and-yellow Chinese and Macedonian flags painted on the side.

News of the donation ignited a torrent of criticism, with 500,000 comments posted by Monday to China's most popular Twitter-like micro-blog service run by Sina Corp. Many asked how could China make the donation to a foreign country when Chinese schools contend with shoddy transport?

Zhang Ming, a politics professor at Renmin University, suggested the donation was a betrayal to the Chinese people.

"One does not have to go through exams to get qualifications (to be a traitor). When one climbs up there and becomes a big official, one will have them," he wrote.

Zheng Yuanjie, a children's literature writer who is often sarcastic in his postings, wrote on Sina Weibo that the foreign ministry had donated the buses to Macedonia in order to "urge local governments to give decent buses to schools" in China.

As many pointed out, the donation comes less than two weeks after the death of the 19 preschoolers drew a harsh spotlight to the condition of Chinese school buses and chronic underfunding of school systems. The 19 children died when a minivan-turned-school bus crammed with 64 people crashed into a truck.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao promised Sunday that new rules on school bus safety would be drafted within a month and said central and local governments will bear the cost of bringing buses up to standard.

The fracas shows how the authoritarian government gets out of step with popular sentiment, and, while that has not mattered in past decades, the government can come across as looking foolish in the Internet era.

While the statement from the Chinese Embassy in Macedonia was still available online Monday, a similar statement had been removed from the website of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Global Times newspaper said in a commentary Monday that the rhetoric of public criticism had become stronger and "sometimes even aggressive" in recent years. "Although it is hard to say whether each of these criticisms are reasonable and appropriate, the government needs to learn how to live with it," it said. "Some 'disturbance' from the public is not bad to the government" as it is necessary for quality governance," it said.

On Saturday, a school bus carrying 39 people in Liaoning province rolled over, injuring 35 students, including two 7-year-old girls with serious head injuries, the China Daily reported.

Tunisair suspends Tripoli flights due to security

(AP) ? Tunisian airlines have suspended flights to Libya's capital Tripoli after armed men swarmed the runway and stopped a plane from taking off, a company official said Sunday.

Flights were suspended until "an improvement in the security conditions," said Soulafa Mokaddem, a spokeswoman for Tunisair. Those to Libya's second city, Benghazi in the east, will continue, she said.

On Saturday afternoon, a TunisAir flight leaving from Tripoli's military airport of Maitiga carrying 47 wounded Libyans to be treated in Tunisia was stopped by 300 armed men, Tunisia's state news agency, TAP, said.

The fighters from the nearby suburb of Souq Jumaa stopped the plane from taking off and attempted to board the aircraft as a way of pressuring the government to investigate a recent attack on their comrades, the agency said, quoting the Tunisian charge d'affaires in Libya, Mohammed Ben Ayed.

The tense standoff was eventually resolved after negotiations with Tunisian diplomats and the plane, carrying the 47 wounded Libyans and seven Tunisian passengers was able to fly back to Tunis, the agency said.

On Wednesday, a band of fighters from the same neighborhood was ambushed by loyalists to the fallen regime of Moammar Gadhafi near one of his former strongholds of Bani Walid 100 miles (170 kilometers) southeast of Tripoli.

Some 15 fighters were killed in the ambush after being sent there to arrest a known Gadhafi supporter and there have been demonstrations in the capital demanding the perpetrators be brought to justice.

One of the men who survived the attack, Mohammed Salim Shibil, described it to The Associated Press on Friday: "We were driving and we were surprised to find all the roads blocked. It was an ambush; we couldn't turn right or left, and then the shooting started. We were shot at from the houses and grenades and rockets came at us from both sides. It was a well set ambush."

Following the overthrow of Gadhafi by rag tag rebels, Libya has been awash with weapons and armed militias with little overarching command structure, often leading to chaotic situations involving gunmen.

Is Samsung giving up on netbooks next year?

An email sent by Samsung to its trading partners appears to shut down any prospect of the manufacturer producing new netbooks after the first quarter of 2012. The email is quoted by French site Blogeee and says that Samsung will switch its focus to 11.6- and 12-inch ultraportables as well as Intel Ultrabooks. The quote does not preclude some of those ultraportables running cheaper processors such as Cedar Trail, which would arguably just make them slightly larger next-gen netbooks, but it does specifically mention the abandonment of the 10.1-inch form factor. Here's our translation:
"Following the introduction of our new strategy in 2012, we will discontinue our 10.1-inch (netbook) product range in Q1 2012, in favor of ultraportables (11.6 and 12 inches) and ultrabooks to be launched in 2012."
[Thanks, Marco]

Canadian troops, doughnuts leaving Kandahar (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Coffee and doughnut chain Tim Hortons is closing its Kandahar outlet after five years in the war zone, shuttering its store on a Canadian military base as the country's troops leave Afghanistan.

Opened on Canada Day 2006, the trailer-like restaurant catered to about 3,000 Canadian troops on a combat mission that was little loved at home. That mission is to wrap up this year, although a 950-strong force will stay to train Afghan soldiers and police until 2014.

"It has been an absolute privilege and honor for Tim Hortons to ... bring a little taste of home to the brave Canadian soldiers serving overseas," Chief Executive Paul House said in a statement that noted sales of 4 million cups of coffee, 3 million doughnuts and 300 containers of supplies.

Named for its hockey player founder, Tim Hortons dominates the coffee and light-lunch trade in its home market, blanketing the country with its spartan yellow and red stores. It says it brews eight in ten cups of coffee sold in Canada.

For about a decade, the restaurant chain was owned by Wendy's International, but the U.S. chain spun off the business in 2006. When Tim Hortons moved its headquarters back to Canada, Prime Minister Stephen Harper gave a speech welcoming the company home.

Odlanier Solis: Legal Issues Keeping Him From Saturday Fight - Bad ...

Odlanier Solis' return to the ring has been canceled. (Photo by Christof Koepsel/Bongarts/Getty Images)

Odlanier Solis, the would-be heavyweight contender and former Cuban amateur star, won't be making his return to action on Saturday after all. Arena Box sent out a press release saying that Solis (17-1, 12 KO) is not allowed to leave the United States due to a legal matter.

It was to be the first fight for Solis coming off of knee surgery, after his knee gave out in a one-round loss to Vitali Klitschko in March.

"I?m very disappointed", said promoter Ahmet Oner. "From what I?m told it?s not too serious and the whole thing should be settled soon but, of course, it annoys me that my fighter cannot fulfil his obligations and take a fight he has signed for. We all make mistakes ? and I know what I?m talking about ? but it?s important that you learn from your mistakes. I hope this is what Solis does as well."

Oner says that Solis will be back in early 2012. The order has him stuck in the States until mid-December.

"He was ready to go", adds Oner. "Now we?ll see what we will do. We will probably bring him back early next year when all legal issues have been solved. I am still convinced that Solis is the only heavyweight in the world today who can actually beat both Klitschko brothers. It?s too bad he cannot prove that this Saturday in Turkey."

The show's main event, pitting welterweights Selcuk Aydin and Jo Jo Dan in a rematch of their controversial 2010 fight, is still going ahead.

Beyonc?, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift sing a new message of girl power

In July I drove 1,800 miles with only the radio to keep me company.?What struck me were the overarching themes of female empowerment sung over the airwaves. Pop music is singing a new tune. Are girls taking the message to heart?

In July I drove 1,800 miles in a moving truck from Florida to Maine, and as my minimalist Budget rental had no iPod adapter, I spent dozens of hours listening to radio stations along the eastern edge of the United States.?

I had just spent more than two years prior living in Egypt, where I was less exposed to western pop. One thing dawned on me, other than my resolve to promptly take my own life if I hear Bruno Mars?s ?The Lazy Song? one more time. What struck me were the overarching themes of female strength and resilience sung over the airwaves. They seemed to air one after another and were impossible to miss.

Much of the music of Pink, Lady GaGa, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, Sara Haze, Beyonc?, and Taylor Swift?told listeners, ?Like everyone, I?m flawed. Deal with it. I?m good enough and worthy of respect.?

I?ve taken days-long trips across the US before, but I don?t remember such a recurring musical announcement of female self-worth. Songs titled ?Born this Way,? ?Lovely,? and ?[Expletive] Perfect? glorify self-acceptance. This latter song, by Pink, croons ?You?re so mean when you talk/ about yourself, you are wrong/ Change the voices in your head/ Make them like you instead.?

Female empowerment through music isn?t new, of course. Madonna built an empire by asserting her independence. But her tone was different. Her songs ?Material Girl? and ?Like a Virgin? communicated that she likes expensive things and time in the sheets.

Granted, the messages of today?s female pop stars aren?t always the stuff of enlightened self-respect. Katy Perry?s song ?Last Friday Night? celebrates vaguely recalled, alcohol-primed flings with multiple partners.

Similarly, the artist Rihanna seems to celebrate her libido much more than any self-efficacy she possesses. Esquire magazine wrote in November that her sensuality is such that ?Rihanna doesn?t really dance,? but rather how she moves on stage ?amounts to choreographed oozing.? Rihanna is Esquire?s 2011 ?Sexiest Woman Alive,? and she didn?t lure this laurel by being profound.

Still, it seemed during my drive to New England that there was less of the bubble gum of Brittany Spears and Jessica Simpson on the radio. There was some nourishment over the airwaves.

The New York Times wrote an October 2011 profile of ?Kelly Clarkson, a pop star proud in her own skin,? discussing her latest album, ?Stronger,? which details ?her own journey of empowerment, addressed directly to fans.?

Olympus execs quit before showdown with ex-CEO (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Three executives of Japan's Olympus Corp resigned on Thursday ahead of a boardroom showdown with ousted CEO Michael Woodford, as the British whistleblower said he would not be surprised if "some criminality" were involved in the scandal engulfing the once-venerable firm.

The camera and endoscope maker admitted this month it hid losses on securities investments for two decades, blaming former president and chairman Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, former vice-president Hisashi Mori and internal auditor Hideo Yamada for the cover-up.

But where the money trail leads remains a mystery, and speculation simmers that organized crime syndicates may somehow be involved.

Kikukawa, who quit as president and chairman on October 26, and Mori, who was fired, had tendered their resignations from the board with immediate effect, as had Yamada, who could attend board meetings but not vote, Olympus said in a statement.

And new President Shuichi Takayama said in a separate statement the current management team was ready to quit once "the path to Olympus' revival became clear."

Woodford, 51, who earlier met with Japanese police, prosecutors and regulators in Tokyo, expressed confidence that the authorities would fully investigate the scandal.

"The talks (with authorities) have passed all my expectations ... and it's very evident to me they are going to investigate this whole issue without bias and thoroughly, and that will include following the money flows in relation to all the transactions," he told reporters.

"I'm immensely encouraged. I've been treated with great courtesy and I'm much more confident than I thought I would be with what I've been told."

Woodford returned to the Japanese capital on Wednesday for the first time since he fled the country after being fired as CEO on October 14, having lifted the lid on some large and dubious payments related to acquisitions by the company.

LOOK THEM IN THE EYE

On Friday, he will attend a board meeting.

"I want to take the opportunity to look the directors in the eye and tell them what I think is best for the company," he said. "I just hope they understand the game is up and do the decent thing, stop damaging the company. Don't look for self-interest, look for the 45,000 people.

"Have some shame, have some dignity, that's what I want to tell them."

Woodford later welcomed the resignations of Kikukawa and the other two executives, but told an audience of business people that the entire current board should resign.

"If they have an iota of care for the company then they should realize what they have done and give assurances they will resign in the near future," said an animated Woodford, who also criticized Japanese shareholders for their relative silence and Japanese media for their slow start to covering the scandal.

Olympus fired Woodford as CEO, asserting he did not understand Japanese culture or the firm's management style.

His return to Tokyo caps a remarkable turnaround for a rare foreign senior executive in Japan. After being sacked, he was told his driver would no longer be available and he should vacate his apartment. Someone Woodford trusted suggested he leave Japan immediately for his own safety, which he did.

Woodford, who said he was axed for questioning the M&A deals, fled to England and has campaigned for Olympus to come clean. Big foreign shareholders have called for his return to run the company, which Woodford has said he was willing to do.

On Thursday, he said he had a "dream team" in mind to run the company, but declined to give details.

Woodford says the Tokyo police, who have mobilized an organized crime unit to take part in the probe, have a big role to play in uncovering the truth. The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and Britain's Serious Fraud Office are also investigating.

POLICE PROTECTION

Woodford had refused to return to Japan because of safety concerns, but says now he is confident police will protect him.

Olympus said on Monday a third-party panel it set up to investigate the matter had found no evidence that organized crime gangs were involved in the M&A payments -- which included a massive $687 million advisory fee paid mostly to an obscure Cayman Islands firm.

Echoing calls by major foreign shareholders, Woodford said Olympus shares should not be delisted, in part to help ensure full disclosure of information. Delisting could cut Olympus off from capital markets and put it under pressure to sell core businesses.

Nippon Life Insurance Co, one of Olympus' biggest shareholders, repeated on Thursday it would back the firm. The insurer and its subsidiaries recently cut their stake to 5.11 percent from 8.18 percent.

Nippon Life Senior Managing Executive Officer Yasuomi Matsuyama told a news conference the affair was regrettable, but appeared to be the work of a small number of executives.

"Olympus, with a 70 percent global share of endoscopes, is an important company that represents Japan and has technological prowess," he said.

Shares in the 92-year-old camera and medical device maker, which lost more than 80 percent of their value as the scandal unfolded, jumped more than 17 percent on Thursday.

"There's no basis for the stock to be up at this level," said Masayoshi Okamoto, head of dealing at Jujiya Securities.

"What's going on in the market right now is just traders playing with fire until the company's announcement."

Olympus is due to announce its revised results by December 14.

Brazil suspends Chevron's drilling rights (Reuters)

BRASILIA (Reuters) ? Brazil's government suspended Chevron Corp's drilling rights until Chevron clarifies the causes of an offshore oil spill, the latest twist in a political firestorm threatening the U.S. company's role in Brazil's oil bonanza.

The decision on Wednesday came as the head of Chevron's Brazilian unit testified before Brazil's Congress, where he apologized for the November 8 spill that leaked about 2,400 barrels of oil into the ocean off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil's National Petroleum Agency said it decided to halt Chevron's drilling rights after determining there was evidence that the company had been "negligent" in its study of data needed to drill and in contingency planning for abandoning the well in the event of accident.

The agency, known as ANP, also rejected a request from Chevron made before the leak to drill wells in the deeper subsalt areas in the Frade field where the spill occurred. The field is located in the oil-rich Campos Basin and is the only block in Brazil where Chevron produces oil as the operator.

The Campos Basin is currently the source of more than 80 percent of Brazil's oil output.

While Chevron said late on Wednesday it had not received formal notice of the drilling halt, the company announced an indefinite voluntary suspension of all current and future drilling off Brazil, apart from plug and abandonment work.

"Chevron acknowledges, however, that ANP has posted a notice of suspension to its website," the company added.

The only rig working for Chevron off Brazil is Transocean Ltd's Sedco 706, which drilled the well that leaked.

The spill is an ominous reminder of the risks involved in offshore drilling, cooling the euphoria over vast subsalt oil reserves that Brazil found in 2007 up to 7 km (4.4 miles) below the seabed. The country is banking on those reserves of up to 100 billion barrels to speed its development.

Chevron has previously drilled for subsalt depth targets in the field, which is also owned by Brazil's state-controlled energy giant Petrobras and Frade Japao, a Japanese consortium. Chevron owns 52 percent of Frade, whereas Petrobras owns 30 percent and Frade Japao 18 percent.

Chevron, the second-largest U.S. oil company, has been fined $28 million by Brazil's environmental agency for the spill, an amount that is sure to rise when ANP and Rio's state government slap fines on the company, as they have pledged to do.

Chevron had already halted all of its local drilling operations after the leak occurred, before ANP's announced suspension. ANP said the suspension will remain in place until Chevron fully restores safety conditions in the field.

Chevron's CEO in Brazil, George Buck, told Brazilian lawmakers that the company "acted as rapidly and safely as possible" and "used all resources" to contain and stop the flow of oil from the well.

"We controlled the source in four days. We worked with transparency and cooperation with the authorities of Brazil," Buck said.

INVESTIGATIONS, RECRIMINATIONS

Chevron initially attributed the "sheen" on the sea surface to naturally occurring seepage from the seabed. The company is being investigated by the Federal Police, which noted discrepancies between Chevron's account of the spill and the government's.

The Frade leak, while small, is likely to provide more ammunition for the growing worldwide opposition to offshore drilling in the wake of the estimated 4-million-barrel BP Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.

The Frade oil flow has been staunched except for residual droplets still bubbling up from a fissure in the sea floor, but this is expected to cease in a few days. Chevron said the oil "stain" on the sea surface now equated to about a barrel.

Most oil has been mechanically dispersed, while 350 cubic meters of oily water has been recovered and will undergo processing.

Addressing a crowded congressional commission through an interpreter, Buck said Chevron still did not understand how the crude rose 567 feet up to the seabed after rock "parted" while drilling in the 8.5 inch-wide column.

"We have an ongoing investigation. We will share the lessons learned with the people of Brazil to ensure that this never happens here or anywhere else in the world," Buck said.

Lawmakers, some calling the spill a "crime," also turned their ire on ANP in the four-hour hearing and which they said had proven ill-equipped and ill-prepared, even as Brazil pursues its ambitions to rapidly increase oil output.

Production is unaffected at Frade, which produces 79,000 barrels per day of oil, or 4 percent of the country's output. Chevron, with a share of Frade production that amounts to just over 1 percent of its worldwide output, had originally targeted peak capacity of about 72,000 barrels per day from the field.

Petrobras has so far dodged the criticism Chevron has faced despite having approved the development plans for Frade field.

Chevron, based in San Ramon, California, is also a 30 percent partner in the nearby $5.2 billion Papa-Terra project, which is operated by Petrobras. Petrobras and Chevron expect to produce 140,000 bpd oil and equivalent gas from Papa-Terra in 2013.

Roots welcome Bachmann with pointed song

(AP) ? Jimmy Fallon's house band the Roots didn't have a warm welcome for Republican presidential contender Michele Bachmann when she appeared on the NBC show early Tuesday.

As Bachmann strode on to the stage at Fallon's "Late Night," the show's band played a snippet of a 1985 Fishbone song called "Lyin' Ass Bitch."

The song begins with a distinctive "la la la la la la la la la" refrain ? the only words audible before Bachmann, smiling and waving to the audience, sat down.

The song itself, about a relationship gone wrong, isn't political. Among its cleanest lyrics: "She always says she needs you, but you know she really don't care."

Bachmann's campaign had no immediate comment.

Fallon joked on Twitter that Roots bandleader Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson was grounded. The show itself didn't have any comment.

The Roots frequently make sly, often obscure, song choices as Fallon's guests are introduced.

When Fox Business Network's Lou Dobbs came out, they played part of Genesis' "Illegal Alien," a reference to Dobbs' frequent commentaries on the topic. Current TV host Keith Olbermann, formerly of MSNBC, heard part of Klymaxx's "I Miss You." Kathie Lee Gifford was saluted with UB40's "Red Red Wine," a reference to the drink she often shares on-air with "Today" co-host Hoda Kotb.

(AP Photo/Virginia Mayo)

BERLIN (AP) ? Germany failed to raise as much money as it hoped in its latest bond auction, in a surprising sign that Europe's biggest economy may not be immune from a debt crisis raging across the continent

A fresh warning that France risks losing its top-notch credit rating and more verbal jousting between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the EU's top executive arm also fueled concerns that the bloc is losing the battle to contain a debt crisis that's already seen three countries bailed out and is threatening much-bigger economies like Italy and Spain.

However, it was the unexpected news that Germany, Europe's biggest economy and the linchpin of the bailouts, suffered one of its worst bond auctions ever that really caught the eye. The country's Financial Agency said its latest euro6 billion ($8.1 billion) auction of 10-year bonds met with only 60 percent demand.

German officials cited a record-low yield and the extraordinarily nervous market environment for the auction's failure, but investors took it as a warning sign that the crisis might even cause trouble to rock-solid Germany.

"If Germany can't sell bonds, what is the rest of Europe going to do?," asked Benjamin Reitzes, an analyst at BMO Capital Markets.

The auction result hit stocks hard, including in the U.S. and sent the euro sliding to seven-week dollar lows. By mid-afternoon it was trading 1.3 percent lower on the day at $1.3345.

It also piled the pressure on Germany's bonds in the secondary markets, sending the yield on the country's benchmark ten-year bonds up a hefty 0.20 percentage point to 2.08 percent, its highest level since Oct. 28.

Germany, the world's fourth-largest economy, is seen as the 17-nation eurozone's most stable pillar and its borrowing rates have been driven down in recent months by high demand from investors seeking shelter from the sprawling debt crisis.

That may partly explain why it suffered what many in the markets are describing as a "failed auction" ? investors may be beginning to think twice about whether the returns on offer are appealing.

Offering only 1.98 percent, the auction's yield was the lowest-ever for Germany's ten-year bond. Germany offered an interest rate of up to 3.25 percent at previous auctions of 10-year-bonds this year.

Even so, analysts called the result worrying, though the German government stressed that its refinancing was not at risk. Having sold off only euro3.9 billion, the agency retained the remainder, to be sold off another day.

"The result does not represent any refinancing squeeze for the emitter," the agency said.

Though Germany is widely-lauded as a model for other eurozone economies, its debt burden is relatively high, by historical standards at about 81 percent of GDP, so it continually has to tap bond market investors for fresh funds. As a result, it won't want to get in the habit of having too many failed auctions.

One advantage Germany has over practically most European economies is that it's triple A credit rating is not at threat ? unlike France's. Though France has seen the yield on its ten-year bond rise in recent days to around 3.65 percent, way ahead of Germany's equivalent 2 percent, it's still much lower than the near 7 percent rates that have provoked such turmoil in Italy of late.

On Wednesday, Fitch warned that Europe's second biggest economy is at risk of losing its cherished top-grade if Europe's leaders fail to stop the debt crisis from worsening because a "further intensification" would result in a much sharper economic downturn in France and the European Union. Fitch's warning came two days after another rating agency, Moody's, delivered a similar message.

And there were few signs Wednesday that Europe's leaders were pointing in the same direction.

German Chancellor Merkel and the European Union's executive arm clashed openly on the need to issue common bonds uniting the 17 euro nations ? another sign that Europe is divided in dealing with its deepening debt crisis.

Jose Manuel Barroso, the head of the European Commission promoted the introduction of jointly issued eurobonds, coupled with stricter budgetary discipline, as the best way out of the debt crisis. Eurobonds, he said, "could bring tremendous benefits."

That's obviously not Merkel's view, who publicly poured cold water on the idea for the second day running ? calling the Commission's push "troubling" and "inappropriate."

She told lawmakers in Berlin that it was wrong to suggest that a "collectivization of the debt would allow us to overcome the currency union's structural flaws."

Germany has long opposed the use of eurobonds, instead calling on profligate member states to clean up their finances which would eventually enable them to borrow at lower rates again.

Proponents of eurobonds argue that they would immediately ease refinancing for weaker eurozone nations. For Germany, though, a pooling of its strength with the weaker members, would most likely to lead to higher borrowing costs.

Instead, Merkel reiterated her call for changes to the EU treaties to guarantee strict enforcement of fiscal and budgetary discipline as "a first step toward a fiscal union."

The easiest way for Europe to counter its debt problems would be for its economies to grow, automatically lowering its debt ratios and generating more revenues. But that hope was dashed yet again as a pair of indicators showed the bloc's economy as being in deep trouble.

The sense of an impending recession was evident in the findings of a closely watched survey from financial information company Markit. Its monthly survey showed that the eurozone contracted for the third month running in November and that the deteriorating economic picture is not just confined to debt-stressed countries such as Greece.

The survey suggests that the eurozone would contract at a quarterly rate of 0.6 percent in the fourth quarter and that the problems are increasingly spreading to Europe's two biggest economies, Germany and France, Markit said.

Further grim news emerged with a shock announcement that eurozone industrial orders collapsed by a massive 6.4 percent in September from the previous month.

Official figures last week showed that the eurozone only narrowly avoided contracting in the third quarter, growing by only 0.2 percent during the period.

Investing Tips For Beginners : 31Night.com, A World of Entertainment

Posted by PikkarainenScarduzio669 | November - 22 - 2011 | Comments Off

Investing can be confusing, especially for the beginner. Getting some basic tips can help a beginning investor to make informed choices that fit their needs. Each person has a different goal when investing and that plays a big impact on how you invest. The following list explains some things beginners should know before investing.

1. Understand that there are no set rules for investing. There are no guarantees and no perfect way to invest.

2. Make informed choices. Before investing in any way you should completely understand how your investment will work and all of the details of the transaction.

3. Make a simple plan to determine your goals and needs. This will help you to determine what investments to make and how much money to invest.

These three tips are great for general investing, but many people are looking to invest in the fast paced world of the stock market. The above tips are a good beginning, but the following tips will further help those interested in investing in stocks.

1. Look at the value of the stock instead of the price. Low cost stocks may be low for a reason. Look at the whole picture. See why the price is low and if there is a possibility it may rise.

2. Check the companies return on net worth. This is the profit after taxes divided by the net worth. It is important to see a trend of growing return on net worth.

3. Spread out your risk. You should not put all your money in high risk stocks. Try some lower risks and some higher risks. This is the best way to protect your money.

4. Understand the basics of stock prices. Prices move up or down depending on future projections.

These four tips can help a beginning investor start investing in the stock market.

No matter what type of investment you are looking into, knowledge will be the key to success. These short tip lists are just the beginning to understanding investing and how to maximize your return. Keep learning and trying.

Let the good news roll in for Young Money! Not only is Drake predicted to top the Billboard albums chart with his latest effort, Take Care, but labelmate Nicki Minaj announced Tuesday night that her new album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, will drop in stores on Valentine's Day 2012.

After thanking her 7 million-plus followers on Twitter for celebrating Pink Friday's one-year anniversary, the recent American Music Awards winner hyped up her fans for a very special announcement. "Its only right to announce it on the anniversary of Pink Friday right barbz???" she wrote.

While the Young Money raptress planned a Ustream chat session with fans, the MC eventually just tweeted the big news because of technical difficulties. "Pink Friday : ROMAN RELOADED will be released on Valentines Day, 2012. Heeeee's baaaacccckkkkk," she wrote. "Its not called Roman Reloaded. Its called PINK FRIDAY : ROMAN RELOADED!!!!!! 4 WORDS!!!! Love u guys soooo much!!! VALENTINES DAY biittcchh!"

No word on whether the project will be a reissue of her platinum-selling Pink Friday or a brand-new album, but based on Cash Money boss Birdman's talk of an early 2012 release for her sophomore effort, it appears to be the latter. He also dished that Minaj may even release a single before 2011 wraps up.

Roman Zolanski is just one of Minaj's many alter egos, and the news of his appearance on her forthcoming project is no surprise. Back in August, Minaj told MTV News that she wasn't interested in collaborating with anyone for her next project and that the vibe of the LP would revolve around a certain rap persona.

"I don't know, I don't think I'm hitting up anybody for features for this sophomore album," she revealed backstage at Britney Spears' Femme Fatale Tour. "Roman ... possibly. But I never give away all my secrets."

Are you exited to for Nicki's new album? Let us know in the comments!

Proposal to tax Jack Daniel's whiskey derailed (AP)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? Jack Daniel's officials are toasting the defeat of a proposal to tax whiskey at its celebrated Tennessee distillery.

The Moore County Council in Lynchburg, Tenn., voted 10-5 Monday evening to kill a proposal that could have taxed Jack Daniel's up to $5 million annually, with all the revenue going to local coffers.

"We hope we've been able to demonstrate that the distillery pays more than its fair share of taxes and that we've contributed to our way of life in Lynchburg," said Tom Beam, senior vice president and general manager of production at the facility.

The vote reversed an earlier one that had asked the Tennessee legislature to authorize a local referendum on the per-barrel tax proposal.

"We've educated the community a little more," Beam said Tuesday in a telephone interview from the distillery, located in the hills of south-central Tennessee. "They realized after we got our side of the story out how much we do."

The 145-year-old distillery and its employees, along with Lynchburg, have been the focus of Jack Daniel's folksy advertising for years. Bottles of the charcoal mellowed sippin' whiskey list Lynchburg's population as 361, but the town and county really have about 6,400.

The distillery, owned by Louisville, Ky.-based Brown-Forman, now pays $1.5 million in local property taxes.

"We hated to see this drive a wedge through our family here," Beam said. "This is our home and we'll try to do the right thing."

The Jack Daniel Distillery, with about 450 employees, is the largest employer in Moore County. The local Chamber of Commerce came out against the proposal at the meeting.

Supporters of the proposal said the issue is dead for now and they may quit trying.

"That's democracy in action, I suppose," Charles Rogers said of the vote after spearheading the proposal.

"I may bow out of this," he added. "But I still think people ought to have the right to vote on it (in a referendum)."

Ten million cases of the sour mash whiskey, led by Old No. 7, are sold worldwide every year, making it the No. 1 brand in sales globally.

"Our friends and neighbors around Moore County, the state, the country and even globally have been supportive," Beam said.

Company spokesmen never said whether the tax would have meant higher prices at the retail level.

Ironically, Moore County is dry, meaning Jack Daniel's cannot be sold legally in the county.
