Republican ads woo disillusioned Obama voters

(AP) ? One Republican campaign ad describes the "buyer's remorse" some voters feel about President Barack Obama. Another ad features a woman saying she had supported Obama because "he spoke so beautifully," but he's failed to deliver on his promises. Still another ad woos Obama supporters with a direct but gentle prod: "It's OK to make a change."

Come on in, the water's fine. That's the message from Republicans as they try to persuade voters who supported Obama in 2008, many of them women, to switch to Republican candidate Mitt Romney this time.

Nearly all of the $100 million Romney and his allies have spent on TV ads in general election battleground states has been aimed at a single audience: swing voters who say they like Obama personally but are disappointed in his job performance. To reach those voters, Republicans have adopted a political soft sell: Coax them to consider Romney without criticizing the choice they made four years ago.

"You have to approach those voters with a respect for their former votes but to point them in a new direction," said Jonathan Collegio, a spokesman for the pro-Romney groups American Crossroads and Crossroads GPS, which together have spent about $34 million on campaign ads so far. "There is a worry that the tonality of an ad, if it's too harsh, will turn off those voters and thus have them tune out the message."

The soft-sell approach drew a rebuke from Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki, who said Republican appeals to women in particular would fall short.

"There is no campaign ad that can change Mitt Romney's out-of-whack positions on issues important to millions of women across the country," Psaki said, citing Romney's support for a budget plan offered by Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., that would make deep cuts to programs like Head Start.

The Obama campaign is running a hard-hitting ad campaign aimed at mitigating Republican overtures to undecided voters, depicting Romney as a tone-deaf plutocrat whose policies would hurt the middle class. The Obama team has recently deployed the president himself in some ads, having him speak to the camera in a reassuring voice as a way to remind undecided voters of what they liked about him.

"You have a choice to make. Not just between two political parties or even two people. It's a choice between two very different plans for our country," Obama says in one ad.

To be sure, most ads from Romney and the Republican-leaning super PACs have been highly critical of Obama, bashing him for his handling of the still-fragile economy and persistently high unemployment. But most also have steered clear of criticizing the president personally.

Collegio pointed to 2004, when President George W. Bush's re-election campaign ran ads mocking Democratic rival John Kerry as an elitist who liked to wind surf. "Personal attacks at Obama because of his temperament and because of his good family pedigree are just going to be difficult to complete in the same way," he said.

Crossroads and other groups are even acknowledging in some of their ads the pride many now-disillusioned voters felt when casting their vote for Obama four years ago.

The Republican Jewish Coalition this week unveiled a new campaign, "My Buyer's Remorse," to appeal to Jewish voters who had supported Obama. Its debut spot features Michael Goldstein, a Democrat from New Jersey who voted for and raised money for Obama.

"I was a big Obama supporter. I really believed in him and what he stood for," Goldstein said, adding that his enthusiasm cooled because of the economy and Obama's policy toward Israel. "I've never voted for a Republican for president, but this time I'm going to vote for a Republican for president."

The ad is part of a $6.5 million campaign that was launched online Monday. The group will begin airing ads on television in September, director Matt Brooks said.

"These are real people telling their stories, not the big, bad Republicans here to hit you over the head with a 2-by-4," Brooks said. "There's no red meat, there are no scary pictures. And that's by design."

The Republican National Committee has put another $5 million behind a TV ad that's one the gentlest, calmest political spots on the airwaves.

The ad shows Obama taking the oath of office surrounded by his family. "President Obama came to the White House with big plans," it says, ticking through promises Obama made like reducing unemployment and cutting the deficit in half.

"He tried, you tried. It's OK to make a change," the ad says.

Republicans say the ad fares well especially with women, who are among the president's strongest constituencies and whom the Obama campaign is counting on to come out for him in large numbers.

"They like him personally, but they don't feel he's done the job," RNC spokesman Sean Spicer said. Instead of taking an us-against-them tone, he said, the message is, "We're all in this together."

Crossroads GPS ran an ad earlier this year that was noteworthy for its direct pitch to women. The ad featured a single mother worrying about her own retirement and the employment prospects for her two children.

"I supported President Obama because he spoke so beautifully. He promised change, but things changed for the worse," the woman said.

Mike McKenna, a Republican who runs an independent polling and strategy firm, told colleagues months ago that Republicans needed to help disappointed voters get over the hurdle of acknowledging that their 2008 support for Obama was a well-intentioned mistake.

McKenna said he and other researchers kept hearing the same thing from voters in focus groups. "They took a chance" with Obama in 2008, he said, "and it was a good chance."

"They just need some permission to say it didn't work out," McKenna said. Ads that made Obama out to be an idiot, he said, "implied you're an idiot for voting for him."

The Secret to Success and Joy is to do it scared | Belvidere Daily ...

Written by Kelly Epperson

I started on my path to joy in May 2001 when I submitted a few personal essays to my local paper. My weekly column is now in all kinds of papers in all kinds of places.

That step of putting myself out there has led to where I am now. Believe me, I was chicken. I emailed my writings at midnight when the world was asleep and no one knew what I was up to. Oh, the fears we harbor.

Fear of failure. Fear of success. Fear of embarrassment. Fear of what others think.

I?ve come so far in my journey since then. My writing led to becoming a speaker. The first time, I was scared speechless. Literally. My first speaking gig was a train wreck, and yet now I speak in front of hundreds to great response and absolutely love it.

Taking these steps, and doing it scared, has taught me so much. We never really ?get over? our fears. We simply learn to keep moving through them.

Every step I?ve taken with my business has evidenced that. In addition to writing and speaking, I?m now a life and business coach. I work with women who want to learn how to tap into their joy and take their lives to the next level.

I had tons of great content to share, yet when I first offered my online life mastery program, I was scared that no one would sign up. I did it scared, and sign up they did.

I?ve done it several times now and the results clients report cause me tears of joy. If I had held myself back because I was too chicken, I would not be feeling the joy of helping these women see their own beauty and letting their lights shine in the world.

As I face new opportunities, fears still pop up. Now I have the tools and confidence that I can try new things and the earth is not going to open up and swallow me. If I fail or if I succeed or I get embarrassed or if someone thinks I?m wacky, the world keeps spinning. We don?t fall off. We just keep learning and growing.

Now I know the secret to my success is to do it scared. I still get nervous doing radio or television, but I move through the fear. I get a little better every time.

It?s a little like writing a book. I have three of my own, and have written seventeen books for others. Yet in the middle of each project, I get overwhelmed and the task seems daunting.

I?ve figured out that my fear is not that I won?t finish the book. It?s the fear of the finished product and putting it out there. I am by far my own worst critic. So I remind myself that every single client has loved their end result. One book I wrote sold 3 million copies.

You would think I?d be over my fears, but they still show up from time to time. I think it?s human nature.

Realizing that we are not alone in these fears takes some of the bite out. When you are able to act even when feeling like a scaredy cat, that?s when you are able to break through. The path entices you to another step forward. Step by step, scared or not, leads to amazing joy. I?m living proof. My clients are living proof.

Whatever it is that you are holding yourself back from, take a step. Don?t chide yourself for feeling afraid. Simply do it scared. The world won?t swallow you. I promise.

Tottenham don?t really want Hugo Lloris, claims Lyon president

Hugo Lloris has been linked with Liverpool and Tottenham in JulyPhoto: Football.ua, via Wikimedia

Hugo Lloris

Tottenham Hotspur are not serious about signing France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, according to Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas.

Andr? Villas-Boas is reportedly keen to recruit a new goalkeeper with Spurs currently dependent on Brad Friedel, aged 41, and former Chelsea shot-stopper Carlo Cudicini.

Lloris, who captained Les Bleus at Euro 2012, has been heavily linked with a move to White Hart Lane this summer, but Aulas insisted the 25-year-old would not be leaving the Ligue 1 outfit unless he ?really wants? to quit the club.

?Tottenham made contact through [Lloris'] agent but there has been no concrete offer since,? Aulas said after Lyon?s victory over Montpellier in New York on Saturday.

?I don?t think they really want him, but we really want to keep him.

?He will stay at Lyon unless he absolutely wants to go. The best present we can give to the fans is finding a way to keep him. We will try to do just that.?

Lloris has made 171 appearances in four seasons at Lyon after moving to Stade de Gerland from Nice in 2008.

He has developed a reputation as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and was handed the captain?s armband for France?s 2-1 victory over England at Wembley in November 2010.

The former Nice shot-stopper was the only man to play every minute of France?s Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, keeping six clean sheets in 10 games.

He has also been linked with a move to Liverpool in July, with reports suggesting Serie A runners-up AC Milan were keen to sign the Reds? first-choice goalkeeper Pepe Reina.

Atlanta voters weigh tax increase to ease traffic

ATLANTA (AP) ? For decades, Atlanta has been the economic engine of the South, a dynamic city on the move. But if you've ever gotten behind the wheel here, it doesn't feel that way.

The Atlanta metropolitan area has some of the worst traffic in America, with drivers routinely stuck in monumental, bumper-to-bumper jams that can turn a 10-minute trip into a miserable, one-hour slog.

Hoping to ease the gridlock, the region's political and business leaders are pushing for a 1-cent increase in the sales tax to pay for billions of dollars in highway improvements and other transportation projects. The proposed tax is on Tuesday's ballot.

Civic leaders say that Atlanta's economic future hangs in the balance, with the metropolitan area in danger of losing business to more-livable cities unless it acts now to reduce congestion.

"Tampa, Charlotte, Denver, Dallas ... they all hope we lose," said Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce President Sam Williams. "The competition has been taking advantage of this."

Atlanta's traffic problems have been 50 years in the making, a consequence of runaway growth. The metropolitan area's population swelled from nearly 1.6 million in 1960 to more than 5.2 million in 2010, and many of the newcomers settled in suburbs radiating farther and farther from Atlanta's core.

Now those commuters are clogging the highways that run straight through the middle of the city or form a big ring around it.

Atlanta has a commuter rail system, but it is laid out basically like a big plus sign and doesn't reach many parts of the city. And there has long been opposition to its expansion.

The TomTom Congestion Index, compiled by the maker of automobile GPS devices, has ranked Atlanta the nation's eighth-most clogged city. According to the 2010 Census, Atlanta had the fourth-worst commute in America, with drivers taking an average of 30 minutes to get to or from work.

From billboards to beauty shops, the campaign for the tax has been hard-fought in recent weeks, and polls suggest the vote could be close.

Metro Atlanta is one of a dozen regions across Georgia that will vote independently on the tax increase, which could generate a total of more than $18 billion statewide for transportation projects over the next decade.

Atlanta stands to gain the biggest share. Supporters estimate the 1-cent increase would generate more than $8.4 billion between 2013 and 2022. The sales tax in the region is now around 5 or 6 cents on the dollar in most cases.

Each region developed a list of projects involving such things as roads, bridges, mass transit, ports, airports and bicycle and pedestrian facilities. Metro Atlanta's list is heavy on road projects ? including the widening or resurfacing of highways, the building of new ramps and reconstruction of a busy interchange ? and light on mass transit.

Opposition in metro Atlanta has crossed political and racial lines, creating unlikely allies and adversaries.

Pro-business Republicans, including Gov. Nathan Deal, are finding themselves at odds with tea-party leaders in the GOP, who argue government can't be trusted to manage the tax revenue responsibly.

The fiscal conservatives have made common cause with black Democrats, who say the plan doesn't do enough to help poor people and minorities because it devotes little to mass transit and overlooks some sections of the city, and with environmental groups, which fear more pollution and development.

"We're just united against a bad idea," said Neill Herring of the Sierra Club. "We've got to break this sprawl habit."

Supporters have bankrolled an $8 million campaign under the banner Untie Atlanta and say the transportation projects will create jobs via the construction work itself and the improvements that will ease congestion and make the city more attractive to companies looking to relocate.

"As a result of our failure to deal with our traffic issues as other leading cities in the world are doing far more rapidly, we risk entering a period of decline," Mayor Kasim Reed said. "This is our region's leadership moment."

Nikki Strickland's commute to work in Atlanta is 30 minutes each way on a great day. But if she leaves the house in suburban Alpharetta after 7:30 a.m., it's too late. Then the drive takes an hour or more.

Her husband's trek into midtown isn't much better. "He can get completely stuck for hours if the wrong thing happens," Strickland said.

She said she is considering voting for the tax but is conflicted. Taxing groceries ? something everyone has to have, unlike a new car ? isn't fair, Strickland said. Moreover, she said, "I just don't feel like Atlanta is serious about transit. And I don't trust our institutions to do this. State government is so dysfunctional."

PFT: Brees looks 'outstanding' in first practice

Randy MossAP

49ers receiver Randy Moss did a lot of talking on UStream after he decided to return to the NFL and before he found a team.? Since finding a team, he hasn?t done much talking.

On Friday at training camp, he did.

?These guys here love to work, they love to compete and they know just by me signing here it?s just something that me being around a great group of guys [who are] young and enthusiastic makes me feel young, too,? Moss said in comments broadcast on ESPN?s NFL Live.? ?The love that I have for the game of football is gonna always be in me and I just wanna play football and that?s just really being here and Coach Harbaugh and this organization accepting me and bringing me here was just something hopefully I can give something back in return and that?s with my play and my presence out on and off the field.?

Also on Friday, coach Jim Harbaugh continued with the gushing that has emanated from multiple members of the organization throughout the offseason.? ?The funnest part is out on the practice field,? Harbaugh said.? ?I get some joy being around Randy Moss out there.? He?s got a knack for saying the right thing at the right time.? The right joke at the right time.?

The joke ultimately may be on those who are ready to write off Randy?s chances of playing well in 2012.? After his comments were played during NFL Live and Herm Edwards said Moss could catch 10 touchdown passes this year, Adam Schefter and Bill Polian were skeptical, to say the least.

?Ten touchdowns is awfully high for a player who was out of football last year, who had a minimal impact the year before, who basically hasn?t made a contribution ? a meaningful contribution ? since 2009,? Schefter said.? ?There?s a spot for him in the San Francisco 49ers offense.? But we?re not getting the 25-year-old Randy Moss, we?re getting the 35-year-old Randy Moss.?

Polian was more blunt.

?The guy I saw two years ago, played against was not the Randy Moss who set records in New England,? Polian said.? ?I didn?t see any explosion, didn?t see any speed.? [Editor's note:? Darrelle Revis may disagree.]? So, he?ll have to make a believer out of me.? If he?s doing well by Week Eight then he?s back.? Otherwise, I have my doubts.?

It would be easy to agree, given the manner in which Moss disappeared in Tennessee after being essentially fired by two teams in less than a month.? But two factors could prove them wrong.

First, the praise of Moss from his teammates, both for his performance and his attitude, has been universal and unequivocal.? Everyone in San Fran loves the guy, and everyone who has seen him work since joining the 49ers believes he can still get it done.

Second, we?ve seen this movie before from Moss.? After his second year with the Raiders in 2006, the popular view was that Moss was washed up, that he was done, that he couldn?t run.

Rejuvenated by a trade to the Patriots, Moss ran down Jerry Rice?s record for single-season touchdown receptions, propelling the Pats to the first undefeated 16-game season.

When Randy?s head isn?t in it, it doesn?t matter what his body can do.? When Randy is ready to go, his team will get the best of whatever he has.

The point is that we shouldn?t assume anything about Randy?s physical abilities based on what we saw in 2010 because his performance was hampered by the fact that he didn?t care.

He cares now.

?I play when I wanna play.?? It arguably belongs on his tombstone.? For now, it should prompt anyone who thinks based on 2010 that he won?t have it in 2012 to think again.

EYES ON LONDON: Crowd in the mood, ceremony soon

LONDON (AP) ? Around the 2012 Olympics and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details of the games to you:

___

THE ANTICIPATION

From AP's Fergus Bell in place and awaiting the opening ceremony:

"A Mexican wave just started. The crowd are getting fired up. The scene is set on the stage in front of me depicting a rural idyll. There are tractors and a water wheel. There is a small cottage in the middle with two smoking chimneys. I have seen similar scenes in the English countryside but this looks a little cleaner, a little more fairytale.

GETTING THERE

AP's Cassandra Vinograd reports from the streets ? well, the railway tracks ? of London:

This reporter was in a bit of a panic ? left work late and wondered how she would ever get through the crowds to board a train to Olympic Park.

But tubes were not crowded and St. Pancras International, where you catch the high speed Javelin train, is a breeze. There were no lines whatsoever to get on the Javelin ? despite crowd-flow measures (barricades, like what airports use for long check-in lines). The line spaces were all empty.

The only glitch was a few travelers grumbling over a broken ticket machine, leaving only one working dispenser on the Javelin platform.

But no worries in the end. With so few jostling for space, everyone got a ticket in time.

___

NO KNOCKOFFS

Egypt's Olympic team won't be wearing knockoffs after all at the London Games.

Nike announced Friday it was donating its gear to the Egyptian athletes. This after the country's committee chairman said they'd turned to a Chinese distributor because the real thing was just too expensive.

Not so during the opening ceremony, though. Nike's shipment isn't due to arrive in London until Saturday.

___

WHITE RIBBONS

The widow of Alexander Litvinenko, the exiled former Russian agent who died from a mysterious case of radiation poisoning, is calling on Londoners to protest Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to the Olympics.

Litvinenko issued a statement shortly before his 2006 death, accusing Putin of ordering him to be poisoned. He had been living in London since fleeing Russia in 2000. In a book written in exile, he accused Russia's main security agency, for which he once worked, of staging the 1999 apartment building bombings that were blamed on Chechen rebels and used as a justification for starting the second Chechen war.

British-Russian relations suffered a serious setback in 2007 after Russia refused to extradite the man that Britain named as the main suspect in Litvinenko's death.

Marina Litvinenko on Friday issued a statement saying "Mr. Putin's agents killed my husband" and called on Londoners wo wear white ribbons, the emblem of the Russian opposition, to proest Putin's visit Aug. 2 that is to include watching the judo.

?Jim Heintz ? Twitter http://twitter.com/jeheintz

___

WHERE TO WATCH?

AP's Jenna Fryer reports from the streets of London:

Is there no such thing as a sports bar here?

Looking for a pub where I can hang with the locals and watch the opening ceremony is proving to be more challenging than I expected.

Since arriving, I've noticed that not that many pubs have televisions, so I've had to ask around for recommendations for the ceremonies. The first two I called ? one of which was the favorite watering hole of the late Amy Winehouse ? said they had no plans to show the ceremonies. "Tonight's just a regular pub night," I was told.

It seemed strange to see bars without TV's, but to not have such a big event blaring from every television in the country tonight is just bizarre.

PREPPED FOR HISTORY

Double-amputee runner Oscar Pistorius has arrived in London for his historic debut at the Olympics and says he's feeling "a mixture of pride, happiness and anticipation" at the end of his long journey to compete at the highest level in able-bodied competition.

Pistorius made the short flight across from his training camp in northern Italy and says he's "really excited" to attend the opening ceremony.

The South African has been battling for four years to reach the 2012 games. He was cleared to compete against able-bodied competitors on his carbon fiber blades in 2008, ran two qualifying times for London in the last 12 months, but missed out on the crucial third under his country's strict qualifying criteria.

But the selectors had a last-minute change of heart weeks before the games and picked him for the individual 400 meters as well as the 4x400 relay.

In an email to the AP, Pistorius says: "This feels like a long time coming and I am ready! This is going to be, I hope, an incredible few weeks of my life."

His first run at the Olympics will be in the 400 heats on Aug. 4. It'll be history.

DIPLOMATIC MARATHON

It sounds almost as exhausting as the sport.

Britain's foreign policy chief William Hague is carrying out a frantic round of Olympic diplomacy, greeting foreign dignitaries arriving for the Summer Games ? and taking a chance to press them over trade, the Middle East and the violence in Syria.

Already, Hague has met with the prime ministers of Haiti, Lebanon, Kosovo, Panama's president and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. In the coming days he has talks scheduled with VIPs from Bangladesh, India, Singapore and New Zealand.

LITTLE BOYS?

The British men's volleyball team is playing in its first-ever Olympics. But truth be told, if the men hadn't earned an automatic berth as the host nation, they likely wouldn't be there.

The team is currently ranked 92nd in the world, and admittedly are a long shot for the gold. "Everybody sees us as the little boys of the volleyball competition. I hope we surprise some people," coach Harry Brokking says.

HIDDEN CEREMONY

Britain's women's footballers say they will wear their opening ceremony uniforms even though they'll be about 155 miles (250 kilometers) away in Wales.

But they'll have to draw the curtains ? at least until late at night.

They have a special room to watch the ceremony on television but they'll not be allowed to be seen in their uniforms until the British team is introduced for its parade at about 11 p.m. local time.

Coach Hope Powell says "the girls really just want to embrace it and be part of it" but admits: "It will be odd."

SUDAN DENIES ASYLUM REPORT

Here's a reaction just in from the Sudanese Embassy, denying reports that one of its Olympic runners has applied for asylum in the U.K.

"We herewith categorically refute allegations ... that a Sudanese member of those who qualified for the Olympic competition and have arrived in London is either missing (or) sought political asylum."

The male Olympian reportedly showed up Tuesday night at a police station near the northern English city of Leeds.

RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE

Draped in a British flag, 35-year-old Greg Kemp struck a pose below the Orbit, just outside Olympic Stadium shortly after entering the stadium.

The London native can't help but reflect on what his city has been through to get to this point.

"I remember winning the bid and the next day the bombings," Kemp says. "And from there to standing here and it's actually done, it's pretty spectacular.

"It's the journey of a city, isn't it? In 10 years' time, this is the history of London. And to make it to here, it's the center of the universe in my opinion and it's the greatest city in the world."

FOOD WITH NO NAME

Food choices are simple at the ExCel arena, the giant convention center hosting seven Olympic disciplines. Because McDonald's has exclusive rights to sell branded products, the dozen concessions at the venue are prohibited from using a specific name.

So, here's what's on offer on large signs:

?"Traditional Roast."

?"Sandwich."

?"Bagel"

?"Italian" or "Chinese."

? "Baked Potato" ? which, by the way, is often called a "jacket potato" in these parts.

CAGE FIGHTERS ... AND DOGS?

Timmy Duggan tried to come up with a way of describing what it's like to be a cyclist during a marquee event, and he left the rest of the American team in stitches.

"You have to have the endurance of a Siberian Husky for the five minutes of the race that truly matters," the first-time Olympian opined, "and it's the strength of an ultimate cage fighter, with fighter-pilot reactions, which is a pretty cool sport, when you think about it."

Duggan certainly won't be making any friends with mixed martial artists, though.

"We're pushing ourselves much harder than you even can in something like cage fighting," Duggan said. "We're going so hard that you can't stand up anymore. We just keep killing ourselves."

For the record, Duggan doesn't own a Siberian Husky, though he admitted that "I've read a lot of books about dog racing." And as for fighting, well ...

"I wouldn't take my chances," he said. "That's why I'm a bike racer."

KEEP DREAM-ING

You get the sense that LeBron James doesn't want to hear another word about it.

"Who's better ? 1992 or 2012?" That's been a talking point for weeks, the comparison between the 1992 Dream Team that went to Barcelona and this year's Olympic team.

"It's never going to happen," James said Friday of a hypothetical game between the two teams. "It doesn't matter how much conversation that we have about this team and the '92 Dream Team. It's never going to be played. Father Time is not going to allow that to happen. So it doesn't even matter."

That wasn't his way of downplaying expectations about what to expect from the U.S. squad in London.

Quite the contrary.

James, who won the NBA MVP award, the NBA Finals MVP award and led the Miami Heat to the title this past season, is fully expecting to add Olympic gold to his unbelievable year.

"I know one thing," James said. "I know we have a great team. And if we play as a team, like we're capable of doing, we can be one of the best teams ever assembled.

IT'S CALLED RACE WALKING

Of all the sports to watch at the Olympics, race walking is probably not No. 1 on many people's lists. But three-time NBA scoring champion Kevin Durant can't wait to check it out.

The Oklahoma Thunder star singled out the event Friday when asked what he plans to watch during his free time in London. That's when he's not trying to help Team USA win a second straight gold medal.

Mind you, he didn't get the name of the sport quite right.

"I want to watch some speed walking," he said, using the incorrect term for the event. "I didn't even know that was an Olympic sport."

TENNIS CHANGE

Update the roster at Wimbledon for Olympic tennis.

Laura Robson of Britain will play singles at the Olympics, replacing Petra Martic of Croatia after she pulled out because of injury.

Robson, a hometown fan favorite who is also playing doubles, will face Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic in the first round. Robson won the Wimbledon junior title in 2008, and expectations have been high ever since. But she has won only one of her five matches in four main draw appearances.

The last British woman to win the Wimbledon titles was Virginia Wade in 1977.

AT OLYMPIC STADIUM

Olympic workers, concessionaires and opening ceremony participants are hustling around Olympic Stadium trying to put the final pieces in place for Friday night's opening ceremony.

Drinks are being transported, dance routines practiced and security workers are taking pains to keep passers by from entering the stadium while final preparations continue.

I did catch a quick glimpse before being turned away, seeing a stage with some sort of cottage as the centerpiece. Your guess is as good as mine.

When There is Constructural Deterioration in your Fredericksburg ...

On June 1, 2012, the adage, "after the rain comes the rainbow" transpired in Fredericksburg when a bewitching arc came into view following heavy precipitation. The Fredericksburg Patch reproduced a photo of this bright rainbow. Indeed, the city is no stranger to precipitation and downpours. Dismally, these weather conditions sometimes cause architectural damage to homes, specifically to roofs and windows. To counter this, homeowners ought to commission restoration professionals who can make houses seem as good as new, offering fresh context to the conviction that a color spectrum often supersedes heavy precipitation.

The part of your dwelling most apt to receive the most deterioration in severe weather conditions is your roof. It's always inimitable to employ the services of a roofing builder to ensure quality roof repair. Do-it-yourself roof repair might put you in danger, but roofing firms have the knowledge and appropriate equipment to guarantee that roofing tasks comply with safety standards.

Roof shingles generally become loose or crinkly following a chain of considerable precipitation, so these must be regularly examined for deterioration. If the roof shingles aren't repaired or replaced at once, moisture will most likely creep into the walls and ceilings. Roof shingles likewise tend to arch or bulge when roofs aren't laid appropriately; these will require to be replaced.

There are a few kinds of roof shingles you can choose as replacement shingles. All offer benefits to insure your roof safeguards your home from damaging weather conditions. However, the degree of these pluses can differ, depending on which type you pick. Thus familiarize yourself with all these kinds so that you'd earn exactly what to ask your roofing constructor.

Asphalt shingles are possibly the most regulalrly employed as they're the most long-lasting and attractive. The roofing Fredericksburg homeowners opt for employ asphalt shingles as they're easy on the wallet, painless to set, and are low maintenance. Another long-lasting type of shingle is slate shingles, which have a great resistance to climatic vacillations and fire.

The windows to your dwelling don't simply present cosmetic functions; the insulation of your home generally depends on the window types, too. Because of its counteraction to rust and bugs, vinyl is a common material employed on windows. Intense heat and other rough atmospheric conditions, however, may compel vinyl to bend. When this transpires, you need an authority on windows Fredericksburg homeowners count on for restoration.

Be it your roof or your windows, have the general contractor Fredericksburg VA residents depend on evaluate your home after a cloudstorm to decide which features require concentration. This way, your dwelling can reattain structural soundness. For more knowledge, go to renewableenergyworld.com/rea/blog/post/2011/03/common-roofing-issues1.

Suu Kyi addresses Myanmar parliament, illustrating year of change

YANGON (Reuters) - Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi addressed Myanmar's parliament for the first time on Wednesday to support calls by a ruling party lawmaker for new laws to protect the country's many ethnic minority groups.

While her address might be routine for many parliaments around the world, it symbolized the huge changes that have unfolded in Myanmar since the military ceded power to a quasi-civilian government in March last year.

After two decades of animosity between the junta and Suu Kyi, who spent much of it under house arrest, her once-outlawed National League for Democracy (NLD) won 43 of 44 seats in April by-elections, giving greater legitimacy to a political system that was widely dismissed at the outset as a charade.

Speaking from the floor of the lower house in the remote capital, Naypyitaw, Suu Kyi said Myanmar's ethnic minorities had suffered decades of civil war and underdevelopment and that laws should be made to ensure their rights were guaranteed.

Suu Kyi, who was sworn in at the end of the last session on May 1, said such legislation should be "based on equality, mutual respect and confidence for the emergence of a genuine democratic union".

Also significant was her backing for a motion tabled by a lawmaker from the NLD's biggest rival, the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), a party dominated by retired military people and created by the former regime.

Citing a report by the Asian Development Bank, Suu Kyi said Myanmar's ethnic minority areas, which are mostly along the borders with China and Thailand, were the worst affected in terms of poverty.

"Civil war still has not ended. Therefore, it can be seen that protecting the rights of the ethnic minorities is more broad-based than preserving languages and cultures," she added.

President Thein Sein issued a call for dialogue last August with more than a dozen ethnic rebel groups to end decades of fighting with the military on multiple fronts and now refers to the militias as "brothers".

Truces have been agreed with all but one group, the Kachin Independence Army, and several have entered into discussions with the government on terms for political agreements.

'Ello my lovely colleagues. It seems that I've come to a point in my life on this site that I'm craving a RolePlay partner.

Notes
I've had many a RolePlay suffer because there are players that find it...acceptable to disappear without a word, leaving their character on the roster and ignoring requests to abandon for adoption. So - With that being said, if you're the type to simply leave once you're bored, then don't apply. I don't mind if you get bored and want to leave, but at least try to make it work or give me notice before you go. I don't expect to be the only one giving plot ideas, so please don't be scared to toss in an idea here and there - It takes two to tango, right? Another thing: I'm not a fan of Canons. I prefer using Canons as NPCs to push the story forward - I adore Original Characters. Whether they are randoms, relatives or friends of Canons, Original Characters are the way to go! I don't do taboo RolePlay (RolePlays that revolve around sexual themes between character cliches like StudentxTeacher, MotherxDaughter, StepmotherxSon, Abusive SpousexOther spouse, etc) I don't do RolePlay that revolves around sex, either. I don't mind flirty or sexual characters, but I prefer my stories to have actual depth and points to them. I can do RolePlay via the site, Skype, or e-mail. I like good dialogue, character development, intensity between characters, and plot development. I highly encourage Romance. I want someone who can show me that they are a creative writer capable of using the English language properly via spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Please Reply or PM if you're interested.
