SC governor blasts media following AP jobs report (AP)

COLUMBIA, S.C. ? South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley called the media too negative after The Associated Press raised questions about her claim that 10,000 jobs had been created in the state since she took office in January.

Haley complained during a Cabinet meeting Tuesday the media doesn't want to report anything positive about her administration. She says regardless of the exact number of jobs, other governors are jealous.

An AP analysis of the 10,000 jobs cited by Haley revealed some of them were announced before she took office and others won't be filled for years. She also included hundreds of jobs created in a business deal that she opposed.

After repeated questioning by the AP, the state changed its jobs total several times before finally lowering it to about 9,000 positions, including 4,000 positions at Walmart stores.

Her response was to criticize the media. A post Monday on her Facebook page read, "To my friends in the press: try to be positive. Just once. You might like it and the people of our state will appreciate it."

She repeated the criticism on Tuesday.

"You know what I want so desperately? I want the people of this state to feel good about the things we're doing right, and it makes me laugh that the press is so determined to talk about the negatives," she said.

Bringing jobs to South Carolina will continue to be her top priority, particularly in rural areas, she told reporters after the meeting. She promised a big jobs announcement this week with Commerce Secretary Bobby Hitt.

Hitt apologized to Haley at the meeting, saying the overstatement was his agency's fault.

"We've changed how we report our jobs data," he said. "There's plenty to be proud of right now in regards to economic development."

The first jobs list provided last week by the governor's office totaled 9,922 jobs. An updated list deleted some lines and added others, bringing the new tally to 10,210 ? raising more questions about seemingly nonexistent announcements and some announced last year.

A third list totaled 9,400 jobs. Further questions saw the number shrink to about 9,000. Commerce Department spokeswoman Amy Love said forthcoming job announcements companies had been listed prematurely.

The final list also included 750 jobs with Amazon.com that were a condition of a deal to give Amazon a 4 1/2 year exemption from collecting sales tax from South Carolina's online customers. Haley opposed the deal, but it eventually became law without her signature.

Haley acknowledged that some jobs were handled by the previous governor. She also acknowledged counting jobs that did not involve the state, including the Walmart jobs and 350 jobs at a rebuilt Tanger Outlet in Beaufort County. Haley attended the grand opening of the center where work started more than a year earlier. She said even if the state played no role in recruiting the jobs, she spoke with company officials and all jobs need to be celebrated.

"My governor colleagues are jealous of what we're doing. All I want is for South Carolina to realize how prideful we should be and how we're on the move, and we've got some improvements but we're going to continue making progress," she said.

Piers Morgan: "I've never hacked a phone"

Piers Morgan protests MP's hacking allegation

CNN

Piers Morgan on CNN Tuesday night.

On CNN?last night, Piers Morgan (former editor of U.K. tabloids The News of the World and The Mirror) addressed MP?Louise Mensch's claims -- made in the course of yesterday's parliamentary hearings -- that the CNN anchor himself had hacked phones "routinely" as editor of The Mirror.

Morgan flatly denied the allegations, which Mensch said were based on statements from Morgan's own diaries, published in 2005 as "The Insider." Morgan insisted that Mensch had not actually read the diaries, in which at one point -- during his editorship of The Mirror -- he wrote:

[S]omeone suggested today that people might be listening to my mobile phone messages. Apparently if you don't change the standard security code that every phone comes with, then anyone can call your number and, if you don't answer, tap in the standard four digit code to hear all your messages. I'll change mine just in case, but it makes me wonder how many public figures and celebrities are aware of this little trick.

"I?want to be really clear about this:?I've never hacked a phone, never told anyone else to hack a phone, or published any stories based on the hacking of a phone," Morgan said last night. Here's the segment from his show, which also includes a short excerpt from a lengthy and heated phone exchange between Morgan and Mensch that aired earlier Tuesday on Wolf Blitzer's "The Situation Room":

Satellite TV Technology Guide For Dummies ? Article Directory

Satellite television is television delivered by the means of communications satellite. On Earth, the signal is received by a satellite dish and set-top receiver box. Satellite TV provides a wide range of channels and services.

Satellite television starts with a transmitting antenna located at an uplink facility. Uplink satellite dishes are very large, as much as 8.5 to 12.5 meters (27 to 41 feet) in diameter. The increased diameter results in more accurate aiming and increased signal strength at the satellite. The uplink dish is pointed toward a specific satellite and the uplinked signals are transmitted within a specific frequency range, so as to be received by one of the transponders tuned to that frequency range aboard that satellite. The transponder retransmits the signals back to Earth but at a different frequency band to avoid interference with the uplink signal. The retransmission typically happens in the C-band (4-8 GHz) or Ku-band (12-18 GHz) or sometimes both. The leg of the signal path from the satellite to the receiving Earth station is called the downlink.

The downlinked satellite signal, quite weak after traveling the great distance, is collected by a parabolic receiving dish, which reflects the weak signal to the dish?s focal point. Mounted on brackets at the dish?s focal point is a device called a feedhorn. This feedhorn is essentially the flared front-end of a section of waveguide that gathers the signals at or near the focal point and conducts them to a probe or pickup connected to a low-noise block downconverter or LNB. The LNB amplifies the relatively weak signals, filters the block of frequencies in which the satellite TV signals are transmitted, and converts the block of frequencies to a lower frequency range in the L-band range. Direct broadcast satellite dishes are fitted with an LNBF, which integrates the feedhorn with the LNB.

The satellite receiver set-top box demodulates and converts the signals to the desired form of output for television, audio, data, etc. Sometimes, the receiver includes the capability to unscramble or decrypt; the receiver is then called an Integrated receiver/decoder or IRD. The cable connecting the receiver to the LNBF or LNB must be of the low loss type RG-6, quad shield RG-6 or RG-11, etc. It cannot be standard RG-59.

The main advantage of satellite TV is that providers don?t have to lay miles upon miles of cable to deliver television programs to you. They don?t need uplink centers in every city which duplicates equipment. This saves you money because satellite TV is less expensive to maintain and up-grade, no re-laying of cable to up-grade services. If the primary uplink center has a problem, the secondary uplink center automatically takes over broadcasting. That?s why satellite TV has a less than 1% outage rate. Satellite TV companies like Dish Network rate significantly higher in customer satisfaction than cable television companies.

big picture agriculture: A Promising New Boulder Company: Cool ...

SolarHeart

I ran across this nifty item in my local paper, the Daily Camera here in Boulder:

Boulder's Cool Energy raises $1 million

Business incubator Idealab was among the investors who provided $1 million in funding to Boulder-based Cool Energy Inc., a manufacturer of low-temperature Stirling engines that convert solar thermal energy and waste heat into electricity, according to Securities and Exchange Commission filings made public Friday. ...continue reading

From the Cool Energy company website:
Imagine a home energy system that uses only the free fuel from the sun to generate heat and electrical power, day and night, all year long through the use of Cool Energy?s novel heat engine technology combined with simple solar thermal collectors, thermal storage and smart control. Each SolarFlow System home or building installation emits zero pollution and therefore offsets approximately 6 tons of carbon dioxide pollution per year. Economics for the SolarFlow System are most favorable in colder climates such as the northern U.S., Canada and Europe.
Combined Heat & Power System:
  • Reduces Energy Bill by up to 75%
  • Faster Payback than Solar PV
  • Built-in Energy Storage
It appears that this new company out of Boulder has a "ton of interest" including a project with Excel Energy in which they are doing a Stirling engine pilot and field test using a solar heating and power system in a Boulder building.

According to the company website, SolarFlow? System in an average size US home provides up to: 80% of heat, 100% of hot water and 60% of electricity at the lowest cost of energy (heat and electricity) of any renewable energy system.

There are also projects underway in developing nations utilizing this company's technology. (Read more at the company website.)

Lung cancer scans can be unreliable: study (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) ? CT scans to measure lung tumors can be unreliable, potentially leading patients and doctors to believe cancer is growing when it's not, according to a study.

In principle, that could mean stopping a treatment that is actually keeping the tumor in check, researchers said in the study, which they said was the first to test how reliable lung cancer scans are, and appeared in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

"The patient and the doctor both need to understand that small changes don't necessarily mean much," said Gregory Riely, at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

"Changes of up to 10 percent can happen simply as a result of the inherent variability of CT imaging."

For the study, the Sloan-Kettering team asked patients with late-stage lung cancer if they'd be willing to have two chest CT scans within minutes. Thirty-three patients said yes.

Doctors normally scan such patients every few months to see if their tumor is growing, which could be a signal to change drugs.

Then the researchers gave the images to three radiologists who had no idea the scans had been repeated before the tumors could have grown or shrunk appreciably.

But the radiologists reported many changes, ranging from a 23 percent shrinkage to a 31 percent growth.

Overall, three percent of the tumors appeared to have grown so much that doctors would diagnose disease progression according to common criteria. And the smaller the tumor, the bigger the variation.

Riely said some doctors will make treatment decisions based on tiny changes seen on scans, although that might be a costly mistake, according to the study's findings.

"We begin to put more and more stock in the data without really understanding the true variability of those measurements," he said.

"The changes are not clinically meaningful and we should not alter clinical care based on them."

Riely did say, though, that the findings did not mean that patients should get repeat scans, which would increase their radiation exposure.

Most likely, the results also apply outside of lung cancer, although patients' breathing could make the chest scans especially variable.

Michael Maitland, at the University of Chicago and who wrote an editorial accompanying the study, said it was surprising such a study had not been done up to now and it was likely to be useful.

"This is telling us scientifically how much noise is naturally there without any treatment or the cancer getting worse," he told Reuters Health.

"It's an important thing to do whenever you are going to use any kind of marker for a disease.

He added that the findings will be helpful to drug developers, who look at increasingly small changes in tumor size during drug testing, forgetting that the scans might be unreliable at that scale.

In addition, the new data can help scientists build better models of cancer progression that might save both time and energy in clinical trials.

"There is a real opportunity here to update our systems and take advantage of the new technology," Maitland said. http://bit.ly/puOY5x
