In January, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie strongly hinted that coach Andy Reid is on the hot seat.? During a Thursday press conference, Lurie basically acknowledged it.

Lurie said he would make no decisions about Reid?s contract until after the 2012 season.? With Reid signed through 2013 and with Reid?s agent, Bob LaMonte, already posturing for an extension, Lurie?s words initially seemed to reflect his intentions regarding the question of whether Reid will get a new deal that applies beyond 2013.

As Lurie continued, it became more clear that, depending on 2012, there may be no 2013.

?I expect a substantially improved team,? Lurie said.? ?We all thought we were a lot better than 8-8 and we weren?t.?

This year, 8-8 apparently won?t be good enough to get Reid one more year.? ?We need substantial improvement,? Lurie said.? ?We have a very good team on paper, and paper doesn?t get you that far if you don?t maximize it.?

Lurie explained that there?s no specific level of achievement that will guarantee Reid?s return.? ?You try to make the best judgment you can after the season,? Lurie said.

There will be no formula regarding the right decision.? ?It?ll be very clear,? Lurie said.

While Lurie acknowledged that another 8-8 season could be excused by a rash of injuries, he reiterated that, generally, ?8-8 is unacceptable . . . that was a really unacceptable outcome.?

Thus, regardless of how it all turns out, Reid is officially on notice.? And Lamonte?s assertion that Lurie essentially has promised Reid a job for life has been completely debunked.

Whether Reid returns for a 15th season depends directly on how the 14th season unfolds.

Should Australia be Threatened by Africa's Mining Boom?

Even Australian miners know how costly it is to build projects in the native land. So rather than risk it in Australia at this time of dropping commodity prices, might as well build a project portfolio elsewhere in the world where administrative and construction costs are low to ensure higher profit return. And Africa could just be the answer to that.

Although the dangers of investing in Africa are arguably high, what with much of the region controlled by rebel groups who either steal the already processed minerals and sell it or blackmail the miners to fund their fight, Australian miners still presumably see a rainbow at the clearing to risk putting their business there.

Africa's main attraction is its low employment costs. Since it is hard to maintain jobs in Africa given its political dilemma, African nationals would be more than glad to acquire and be able to maintain jobs, never mind if the wages are minimal.

In South Africa, a rock drill operator, one of the most demanding jobs in the mines, earns only R120,000 or A$13,800 a year. That could translate to potential savings for Australian miners.

To date, about 200 Australian mining companies are present in Africa doing more than 650 projects across 37 countries, including Discovery Metals which is already starting a copper mine in Botswana, Sundance Resources?which has iron ore operations in Cameroon and the Congo, and Paladin Energy?with its uranium mine in Namibia and another in Malawi.

With the apparent cross-over of mining investments, mine workers in Australia may do have to live within their financial means as jobs could trickle down in the native land and get transferred anytime elsewhere in other parts of the globe.

Marketing Never Happens With One Hit | Channelnomics

It?s political season, as evidenced by the Democratic and Republican national conventions, and the endless streams of television and Web ads. I will not debate the integrity of political messages or the tone of the campaigns. Worth noting, though, are the marketing lessons that show up every four years when we select a new president: the need for extended marketing campaigns.

An old saying in politics goes, ?If you want the voter to get the message, you have to hit them with it at least seven times.? This happens in multiple ways. As seen in the countless interviews on cable news, political operatives will always come back to the same talking points regardless of the question. The campaigns and their surrogates act in concert to ensure voters hear the message at least seven (or more likely 25 plus) times.

The technology industry, particularly the channel, could benefit from this political paradigm. Over the last decade, technology marketing has degenerated from performance-based lead generation and brand development to a series of isolated, one-off initiatives that are killed if they fail to deliver immediate performance. Many marketing initiatives are considered failures if they fall short of their stated objectives and/or don?t result in an instant return in revenue. And worse, short-term marketing efforts are deemed successful if they produce marginal returns that are equally short-lived.

It?s time we change the technology marketing paradigm from one of short-lived, short-sighted lead generation programs to one of extended, integrated campaigns designed to build brand identity, engage partners through value propositions, and create shorter product and service sales cycles.

Vendors and solution providers often talk about ?solutions,? ?systems? and ?integrated technologies,? but their marketing activities tend to emphasize single products or technology lines with promotions that are little more than mechanisms for generating sales leads. This approach of direct marketing does result in measurable short-term sales activities and is known as ?push marketing,? in which a vendor drives its message around a specific product.

Experience, though, is showing us that push marketing is increasingly becoming less effective as even partners are increasingly becoming sour on short-term deals. Partners don?t want to be sold to, and they don?t want to be bombarded with sales pitches, special offers and incentives ? they want extended, profitable relationships. I would argue they are savvy enough to know the first objective of a marketing person is to open the door, and that of the salesperson is to establish the dialogue.

In fact, what our end customers want from all of us is engagement. They want vendors and solution providers willing to develop relationships. They want technology suppliers and service providers who understand their business, market dynamics and future operating climates, and are able to react to these business factors ? not just push the latest shiny gadget or fancy cloud. They want to know more about expertise, capabilities, competencies and, the hardest to deliver, outcomes.

In this context, social media isn?t just about tweeting; it?s about developing trusted connections with influencers and decision-makers over the communication channels of their choosing. The development of such relationships means vendors and their marketers need to think beyond the immediate sale and engage with target customers on issues and trends that have nothing to do with their particular product or service.

In broad-based brand marketing, engagement means forming communities through which experience and best practices are developed and shared. The brand is a platform through which expertise is extended in collaborative discussions and information exchange. In education programs, this means providing customers with as much ? if not more ? agnostic information and enablement tools as with materials designed to stimulate a sales call or event.

Through extended engagements in which a vendor?s message is offered multiple times in multiple ways across varied medium, vendors will develop deeper, more valuable and more productive partner and end-user relationships. The leads developed through extended marketing engagements that focus on the relationship as much as the message will produce better and more valuable leads.

Those vendors that think beyond ?this quarter?s objective? and ?marketing at the lowest possible expense? will blaze a path to a more successful future.

California law encourages lessons on guest worker program

SACRAMENTO (Reuters) - California's governor has signed a law encouraging schools to teach the history of a guest worker program that brought in Mexican farm laborers as the national immigration debate heats up.

The bill, signed by Democratic Governor Jerry Brown Tuesday, urges social studies teachers to include material on the "Bracero" program that brought in close to 5 million people over roughly two decades, forming the first big batch of modern Mexican immigrants, supporters said.

Many of those immigrants came to California.

The program, which ran from 1942-1964, was a crucial part of the post-war American economy, supporters said, adding that teaching its history would also highlight mistreatment of migrant workers, some of whom were never paid their due wages.

"School children will now be able to appreciate the great contributions made to this state during a critical time in our history by the Braceros," the bill's sponsor, state Senator Kevin De Le?n, said in a statement.

The law, which focuses on the curriculum for grades 7-12, does not require teachers to include the Bracero program in their lessons, but encourages them to do so.

California enacted a similar law last year that required instruction in social science to include the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans.

The governor's focus on immigration comes as activists are becoming increasingly vocal in their demands that Brown sign an immigration bill dubbed the "anti-Arizona" that would shield some illegal immigrants from status checks by local police.

At a rally on the steps of the state capitol on Tuesday, that bill's sponsor, Democratic state Assembly member Tom Ammiano, encouraged supporters to put the immigration debate in historical context.

"Remember history. Remember what happened to the Japanese-Americans. Remember the Chinese Exclusion Act. Remember when they wanted to quarantine gay people because of HIV. We stood up and we fought that," Ammiano said. "California needs to take the lead on this issue."

The immigration bill has stirred opposition from sheriffs around the state who say that the bill would unduly burden county law enforcement and pit them against federal officials.

Roughly 100 immigrant rights groups, police chiefs and mayors support the measure, which would serve as a counterpoint for what backers say is racial profiling inherent in Arizona's crackdown on illegal immigration that was allowed to stand by the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this summer.

In passing the bill, California would stand apart not only from Arizona, but also Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Utah, which have all adopted strict laws in the past two years to try to discourage illegal immigrants from settling in their states.

California has the largest population of undocumented immigrants in the United States, with nearly 2.6 million at the start of 2010, according to government figures.

World stocks drop amid signs eurozone in recession

PARIS (AP) ? World stock markets slid Thursday after a survey suggested the eurozone is in recession and as a modest pickup in the U.S. dashed hopes for more stimulus from the Federal Reserve.

A successful bond sale in Italy ? which eased concerns that the country's borrowing rates are spiraling out of control ? wasn't enough to buoy markets, although the euro made modest gains. The currency shared by 17 countries rose 0.1 percent to $1.2547.

In afternoon trading in Europe, Germany's DAX was down 0.8 percent to 6,952. The FTSE index of leading British shares, meanwhile, fell 0.2 percent to 5,733, and France's CAC-40 dropped 0.5 percent, to 3,3396.

Trading has been light this week as investors anticipate Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke's speech Friday at an economic symposium that they hoped would indicate Washington is preparing more measures to jump-start the economy. But news that the American economy was picking up damped those expectations. On Wednesday, the Fed's "Beige Book" survey of economic sentiment was fairly positive and the country revised up its growth figures for the second quarter.

The American economy seems to be in an inconvenient middle spot: not growing fast enough to drive down unemployment and spur a global rally, but likely not doing poorly enough to persuade the Fed to step in again.

Ahead of the opening bell, stocks on Wall Street were trending downward. Dow futures were trading 0.2 percent lower at 13,054, while S&P 500 futures were down 0.3 percent to 1,403.50.

Europe, on the other hand, is mired in bad news. August's Economic Sentiment index fell more than expected and suggested eurozone growth could retreat 2 percent this year.

"The survey revealed falls in sentiment in the consumer, services and manufacturing sectors, confirming that the downturn is related to both domestic demand and exports," said Jennifer McKeown, senior European economist for Capital Economics. "And perhaps more worryingly, there is further evidence here of a sharp slowdown in Germany."

Earlier in Asia, the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index dropped to another three-year low on Thursday, losing 0.03 percent to 2,052.58.

Elsewhere, the Tokyo Stock Exchange's benchmark Nikkei fell 1 percent to 8,983.78 and South Korea's Kospi slipped 1.2 percent to 1,906.38. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index also was down 1.2 percent to 19,545.93, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.9 percent to 4,315.70.

Benchmarks in Singapore, Indonesia and Taiwan also fell.

Concerns about the economy are driving down the price of only since less growth typically means lower demand for energy. Benchmark oil for October delivery fell 17 cents to $95.32 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Owners of villas that have been abandoned for more than three months will have to pay 5 percent of their market value, and 10 percent for those abandoned for over a year.

Investors or owners of vacant villas will also be fined from VND10-20 million (US$480-960).

The Ministry of Finance will be in charge of re-examining and collecting fines.

Statistics from the municipal Department of Construction showed that as of June, the city had 655 villas and 574 semi-detached houses that were unused, despite having been completed.

In Van Phu, My Dinh and Quang Minh urban areas, many villas have been left vacant, covered by wild grass and creepers.

Tens of villas in the Co Nhue-Xuan Dinh area in Tu Liem District are in the same condition. Most are undecorated and unfurnished, and some have become dumping sites or places for street vendors to set up shop.

Many of the villas are over a hundred square metres in area, and on sale for around VND10-30 billion.

Tran Minh Hieu, owner of a 180-square-metre villa in My Dinh 2 Urban Area in Tu Liem District, said the proposed tax levels are too high and will cause difficulties for investors, especially given the state of the real estate market.

Hieu owns a villa worth VND25 billion, and would have to pay VND1.25 billion if it left vacant.

He said he is trying to sell the villa, but has received little interest from buyers.

?I will do something to avoid this tax, but I can?t move in there because my job, my relatives and my children?s schools are all here in the centre of town,? he said.

Dang Hung Vo, former deputy minister of Natural Resources and Environment and a senior consultant at the ministry, said that there are three reasons for abandoned villas.

Firstly, developers are waiting for property prices to go up. Secondly, speculation. And thirdly, people have invested in property as a means of depositing idle money.

He said the proposal is a good idea, but added that authorities need to carefully consider the level of taxes.

?The key purpose of this solution is to force the owners of these villas to use them. The tax should be imposed annually and gradually increased each year,? he said.

For example, the first year could be 25 percent and increase to 50 and 75 percent of the property value for the next two years, he said.

For investors who have trouble selling their properties, Vo suggested that they should let them out. This would reduce the high demand for accommodation in the city and help them avoid the new tax.

US 'withheld' email evidence in WikiLeaks case

Lawyers for the US soldier charged with passing a trove of classified documents to WikiLeaks accused the military of withholding hundreds of emails over fears of a publicity nightmare.

The defense team for Private Bradley Manning, who could be jailed for life for "aiding the enemy" over the massive security breach, alleged that more than 1,300 messages were ignored by prosecutors for at least six months.

The emails relate to the conditions the 24-year-old trooper was held in during military detention at Quantico, Virginia, where he was sent after a spell in a US Army jail in Kuwait following his arrest while on duty in Iraq in 2010.

Manning's civilian lawyer David Coombs told a pre-trial hearing that 84 emails were released to the defense team on July 25 last year, but he later discovered that 1,290 other such messages had not been passed on to him.

The government "chose to let these emails collect dust somewhere," Coombs said on the first day of the three-day hearing at a military base in Fort Meade, Maryland, 30 miles (48 kilometers) from the US capital.

Military prosecutors then suddenly announced that 600 other messages had been handed to Manning's legal team on Monday, ahead of the hearing, but Coombs persisted with his attack.

"It is the defense position that the government has been playing word games," the lawyer said, implying that the emails were held back because the government had adopted a deliberately narrow definition of their relevance to the case.

The soldier's lawyers argue that he was mistreated at Quantico, and even alleged Tuesday that the former intelligence analyst had been ordered by guards to stand at attention while completely naked.

Coombs then took aim at top Marine officers responsible for running the jail, who he said had put their concerns about bad publicity ahead of their duty to provide fair treatment to detainees.

The emails go as high up the chain as General George Flynn, the then commanding general of the US Marine Corps, who had insisted that Manning be placed on suicide watch, according to Coombs.

Top officers at Quantico regularly sent emails to Flynn informing him of Manning's detention conditions, which the defense says were unnecessarily harsh, and told the Marine commander who the jailed WikiLeaks suspect's visitors were.

The military "kept Manning in maximum POI (prevention of injury)" custody "because they didn't want any negative publicity," Coombs said, reading out an official list that placed media risks at the top of eight noted concerns at Quantico.

After his detention at the Marine Corps Brig from July 2010 to April 2011, Manning was transferred to a prison at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, where he was placed under less restrictive conditions.

If the court finds he was abused, the case could potentially be thrown out, or any eventual sentence reduced.

However, military counsel at Fort Meade denied that the emails had been held back and said they amounted to nothing more than "argument and conjecture" among the various military commanders involved.

"They were concerned about public affairs (media handling) but they were also concerned about Private First Class Manning," said Major Ashden Fein, the lead counsel for the government.

Colonel Denise Lind, the case judge, however said the months-long delay over disclosure of the emails remained unexplained.

"I still wonder why you waited until July," Lind asked Fein, before ruling that she would examine the estimated 700 emails from the original bundle that remain in government hands, before deciding if they too should be handed over.

The publishing by WikiLeaks of official documents, including military logs concerning the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, triggered a diplomatic firestorm that hugely embarrassed American officials and rankled the nation's allies.

Manning, who is attending this week's hearing, has not yet entered a plea in the case and his trial now looks set to start in February -- five months later than originally thought.

Leaving Our Toddler's First Home | Toddler Times

I remember the day we brought Harrison home to our little grey house with the black shutters.

It was cold, even for middle October in North Carolina. ?We had entered the hospital with eighty-degree weather and left three days later to the mid-fifties. ?He was bundled up in a white sleeper that my friend Emilee gifted us many months ago, and a ?Sweet Pea? Gymboree blanket that he still sleeps with to this day. ?I was tired and sore but happy as we pulled into our driveway. ?Doug parked and we lifted our sleeping baby out of the backseat and walked him into our home with little fanfare?? it was just the three of us, so no cameras or balloons or relatives. ?That would all come later.

We settled in and made a snack and took a snooze and started a load of laundry. ?Harrison stayed swaddled in blankets and love and I never knew more peace than that day in our little house.

Now we are boxed up and ready to hand over the keys to that house and my heart feels a certain heaviness that betrays my excitement for this new chapter in our life. ?I think of all the first moments we had in that house and I wonder ? what will Harrison remember, if anything?

  I doubt he'll remember these, mostly because of his age but also because we've never taken him trick-or-treating. But I remember all the poses on the front porch.
