Nearly 60 Medals Won by U.S. Track & Field Collegians at London Olympics

August 13, 2012

NEW ORLEANS ? It was a successful run for current and former U.S. track & field collegians at the 2012 London Olympics. A total of 59 current or former student-athletes of NCAA, NAIA, or NJCAA institutions won an Olympic medal, including 23 gold in the sport of Athletics. Eight of those that are bringing home medals were collegians during the 2012 seasons.

Kansas? Diamond Dixon was the only collegian from the 2012 season to win gold as she ran a leg on Team USA?s women?s 4x400 relay in the preliminary round.

Finalists for The Bowerman ? collegiate track & field?s top award ? did well at the Games. Arizona?s Brigetta Barrett claimed silver for Team USA in the women?s high jump while Florida?s Tony McQuay won silver as part of the U.S. men?s 4x400 relay. Oregon?s Brianne Theisen placed 11th in the women?s heptathlon while Southern Utah?s Cam Levins placed 11th in the 10,000 meters and 14th in the 5000 meters ? both for their home country of Canada. Illinois? Andrew Riley (Jamaica) was the first one out of qualifying for the semifinals of the men?s 110 meter hurdles.

Individually, the top former U.S. collegian was Cal State Dominguez Hills? Carmelita Jeter (USA). With three medals, each of a different standing, Jeter led the tally. Her gold medal was earned as a member of the world-record-setting 4x100 relay, and she also grabbed silver in the 100 meters and won bronze in the 200 meters. Cal State Dominguez Hills is in NCAA?s Division II.

Former Texas star Sanya Richards-Ross (USA) was the only with U.S. collegiate ties to win two gold medals. Richards-Ross claimed victory in the 400 meters and as anchor of the U.S. 4x400 relay.

Two total medals were also won by Tennessee alum Justin Gatlin (USA), Arkansas? Veronica Campbell-Brown (JAM), Tennessee?s DeeDee Trotter (USA), Florida?s Will Claye (USA), and Mohawk Valley Community College?s Lalonde Gordon (TRI).

Tennessee and Florida are credited as having the most medals among current or former athletes with six apiece. With three golds, Tennessee also led with Texas in the category. Golds for Tennessee included Aries Merritt (USA, men?s 110 meter hurdles), Tianna Madison (USA, women?s 4x100 relay), and DeeDee Trotter (USA, women?s 4x400 relay). Richards-Ross won two golds to go along with Bianca Knight?s gold in the women?s 4x100 for Texas? tally.

In the conference count, the SEC claimed the most total medals (28) and golds (8). Ten of the SEC?s 14 members had a current or former squad member win an Olympic medal. Tennessee and Florida helped the league?s cause in leading the way and were followed amongst league members by Arkansas (3), LSU (3), Texas A&M (3), Auburn (2), South Carolina (2), Mississippi (1), Alabama (1), and Georgia (1).

Big 12 schools accounted for 12 medals, including six gold. Texas led the way with five, followed by Texas Tech (3), TCU (2), Kansas (1), and Kansas State (1).

The Pac-12 was third among the nation?s leagues with eight medals total.
