The 2013 MLB schedule won?t be released for a couple of weeks, but there are strong indications that interleague play will send the Dodgers to Yankee Stadium for a three-game series (that, says Vin Scully, was one reason he wanted to come back for another year). The Dodgers and Yankees have met plenty of times at Yankee Stadium ? but all were in the World Series, most recently in 1981. Next season?s series will be the first regular season trip to Yankee Stadium for the Dodgers.
More significantly, it may be the most expensive matchup in the history of professional sports, according to Business Insider.
Barring some elephant polo match between members of Indian royalty that may have occurred in the 17th century, the 2013 Dodgers-Yankees matchup may have more dollar signs attached to it than any sporting event in history. Thanks to their recent shopping spree, the Yankees West Dodgers have committed to just more than $193 million for the 2013 season. Leading the way are Arian Gonzalez ($21.8 million), Carl Crawford ($20.8 million) and Matt Kemp ($20.2 mil).
The Yankees, meanwhile, have a 2012 payroll of $209.8 million. Alex Rodriguez is at $29 million, with Mark Teixeira and CC Sabathia at $23.1 mil and $23 mil, respectively. How would you like to be the guy who cuts those checks? It would give me a headache all day.
Of course a lot could happen during the off-season, and the Yankees have a handful of guys heading to free agency. Heck, these payrolls may increase. But as it is now, when these teams meet in 2013 their payrolls would combine to $402 million (yikes). That beats the previous U.S. record of $385 million for this season?s Red Sox-Yankees series.
And with a few additions it could challenge the all-time champion matchup between Spanish soccer behemoths Real Madrid and Barcelona ? $412 million this past season.
But we?re getting ahead of ourselves. The Yankees and Dodgers could conceivably meet in this year?s World Series ? making it the most expensive post-season game in American sports history. But speaking of money, I wouldn?t bet any of mine on that actually happening.
