Step 8: Health Certificate

Within 14 days of your pet?s arrival in Hawaii, you need to take your cat or dog to your local veterinanarian one last time to get a health certificate and tick treatment. (NOTE: Some airlines require your pet?s health certificate to be issued within 10 days of arrival. Check if that?s the case with the airline you?ll be using.)

As mentioned in Step 7, if you?ve postponed submitting your paperwork until you get your pet?s health certificate so you can mail it along with the rest of the paperwork, you must bring your pet to the veterinarian exactly 12-13 days before your pet?s arrival in Hawaii. This is because the Department of Agriculture requires that the health certificate be issued within 14 days of arrival. (I?m not sure if ?14 days before? is technically the same as ?within 14 days,? so I wouldn?t do it more than 13 days before, just to be safe.)

However, if you?re planning to submit your paperwork beforehand (without the health certificate) and bring the health certificate with you on the flight to Hawaii, then you can visit the veterinarian anytime within 14 days of your arrival in Hawaii.

When you call to schedule the veterinarian appointment, you may also want to ask if you can take a copy of your pet?s medical file home with you after the appointment, since it will probably be the last time your pet visits that veterinary office.

On the day of your veterinarian appointment, bring with you:

Health form (1 copy for each pet): For some reason, the Department of Agriculture wants your veterinarian to fill out and sign this form, in addition to writing up a health certificate. (Seems redundant, I know.) The truth is, you can probably fill out most of the form yourself, except for the signature/date at the bottom. If you?re unsure about any of the vaccination information, just leave that part blank for the veterinarian to fill in. If your pet is a guide dog or service dog, you need to fill out the information for your dog?s most recent vaccination only. (However, if you know the info for your dog?s previous vaccination, I?d fill out that part, too.)
Vaccination certificates (2 for each pet, except for guide dogs and service dogs, which need only 1): You should have gotten these certificates during Step 2. Bringing them along will ensure that your veterinarian fills out the health form and writes up the health certificate with the correct information.

During your veterinarian appointment:

Have your veterinarian administer a tick treatment containing fipronil or an equivalent product for each of your pets. (Revolution is not acceptable.)
Have you vet fill out and sign a health form (mentioned above) for each of your pets.
Have your vet create a health certificate (one for each pet) that includes:
- Microchip number
- Veterinary identifying info (including vet?s original ink signature)
- Animal identifying info (breed, color/markings)
- Name of product used in tick treatment
- Date of tick treatment
- Info from your pet?s rabies vaccination certificate(s):
  - Product or manufacturer name
  - Date administered
  - Route administered (subcutaneous or intramuscular)
  - Serial or lot number
  - Lot?s expiration date
  - Booster interval (e.g., 1-year, 3-year, etc.)
Pick up a copy of your pet?s medical file (if you made previous arrangements to do so).

After your veterinarian appointment:

Make a photocopy of the completed health form and health certificate for your records.
If you postponed submitting your paperwork until you got your pet?s health certificate:
1. In Part I of the Dog & Cat Import Form, under ?DOCUMENTS SUBMITTING,? check off the ?HEALTH CERT.? box.
2. Immediately follow these directions.

Social insects may not love their fellow bugs as much as once believed.

"Altruistic" insects such as ants and bees are thought to sacrifice their own chance to reproduce in the name of the greater good ? that way, their genes are passed down through the community's queen. But new research published this week in the journal Science explains why certain wasps, rather than set out to establish their own colony, choose to serve another queen completely unrelated to them. They do so for purely selfish reasons ? because it gives them a shot at the throne in an already thriving hive. Evolutionary biologist Ellouise Leadbeater of the University of Sussex in England, the study's lead author, discusses the research and how it reinforces our understanding of altruism.

What's so special about wasps like Polistes dominulus?

This particular species is kind of a model of the evolution of altruism. Their behavior is generally explained by something called inclusive fitness theory: You devote your time and resources to helping others produce their offspring if the other animal that you're helping allows you to produce some of your own offspring while you're helping them. Or [you help] if the other animal is a relative ? because by helping your relatives you're passing on your own genes too, just indirectly.

But this particular species was a real problem for that theory because they were helping nonrelatives to breed but didn't seem to be producing any of their own offspring. It was kind of an evolutionary mystery.

Describe what you did to get to the bottom of it.

We went to Andalusia in the south of Spain [to study the wasps]. We collected the nests and looked at how many eggs the subordinates were laying over the course of the season. We compared this number to the number of eggs that wasps that nested alone were laying.

At the beginning of the season, there didn't seem to be any advantage to helping others. But what we found is that subordinates were occasionally inheriting the nest. So when the dominant died, a subordinate would take over.

She'd get a nest that's large, that's productive, that's got the whole workforce that the original dominant had. It's only a small number that get to take over, but when they do, they produce a large number of eggs.

Toward the end of the season, none of the wasps that had tried to reproduce by themselves were producing any offspring. But the subordinates ? were doing really well.

What do the findings mean for how we view these wasps' behavior?

It's really great to have this evolutionary puzzle explained. Now we know why these individuals help out at the nests of nonrelatives and we know it fits in really well with inclusive fitness theory.

This explains why these wasps haven't become advanced "eusocial" insects. Unlike honeybees, they don't have sterile workers ? they're all potential queens. You absolutely have to be helping your relatives if you're going to be sterile.

The wasps' inheritance mechanism, on the other hand, means sometimes it pays to help nonrelatives. That could be something that's preventing the next step in evolution, the next level of society from forming in these species.

The study answered some questions about wasps' survival tactics. Did it raise any, as well?

What we would really like to know is why any of the wasps decide to nest alone. Because really, what we've shown is it always pays to be a subordinate wasp. You should never go off on your own, especially if you don't attract any helpers. That's what our data seem to imply. So we'd like to know why it is that a small fraction of wasps do still decide to carry on and do it by themselves.

One possibility is perhaps these wasps have tried to join other wasps and they've been rejected. We don't know if that's the case yet but that's something that we could be looking at next.

Other legitimate defensive strategies to some crimes, but not all, include intoxication (provided it is involuntary), marital coercion and duress.

A plea of duress may not be used in certain types of treason cases or in cases involving murder or attempted murder. Duress is used when a person commits an offense under threat of violence or other pressure. It is the use of any unlawful coercion or threat.

Marital coercion may be used as a statutory defensive strategy to most criminal charges under English law and in Northern Ireland. It must be proven that the husband was present when the wife committed the crime and that they were legally married. While the coercion need not be violent or the threat of violence, it is insufficient for the wife to have been acting out of loyalty to the husband. This strategy does not apply to civil partnerships.

Some strategies may be used to reduce a charge from murder to a less serious crime. Diminished responsibility and infanticide are two examples. Diminished responsibility is used when it can be proven that the defendant was suffering from an abnormality of the mind that substantially impaired his mental responsibility at the time when he killed someone. This allows the judge to sentence the defendant to hospital treatment instead of punishment by incarceration.

The term, ?infanticide?, refers to the homicide of an infant. It often happens within 24 hours of the birth of the baby and it is frequently the mother who is the culprit. The Infanticide Act of 1938 defines an infant as a baby under the age of twelve months. It applies to the mother and makes allowance for the situation that she may be suffering mental imbalance as a result of not having recovered from giving birth/lactating. As with diminished responsibility, it allows the judge to impose a more appropriate and humane sentence.

If your teenager wants to quit, it is probably a good idea to make it simple for them to do so without them losing face or feeling that they have failed. It is a problem to make lifestyle alterations even at that relatively young age but who knows, perhaps they will return to (a degree of) vegetarianism after they leave home and start cooking for themselves.
