Twitter users mistakenly credit impostor with iconic photo, then go to great lengths to correct the error
This past weekend was an emotional time for many Americans, and photographic tributes to the victims of the 9/11 terror attacks were a common sight around the web. One such image was shot by photographer?John de Guzman at the site of the Ground Zero memorial, and showcases the stunning rays of light that shine yearly where the towers once stood. The work is titled?Opening up Skies, and is now one of the most popular pictorial nods to that fateful day.
The iconic snapshot took?social networks by storm, and since a?Twitter user?posted it to photo sharing service TwitPic, it has received nearly 600,000 views. It was quickly picked up by the?New York Post, and from there it became an instant viral hit.?Unfortunately, the user who posted it to Twitter wasn't John de Guzman, and what's more, the picture wasn't taken over the weekend ? it was snapped a year ago on September 11, 2010.
While some amateur photographers would be elated with an image garnering so much attention, for a professional like Guzman, having a piece of work attributed to someone else ? and incorrectly dated, on top of it ? is endlessly frustrating. The New York City dweller has spent the last day attempting to right the wrong, but it hasn't been easy. Thankfully, the same internet community that unwittingly credited someone else with the amazing shot has done its best to correct the mistake.
The same?New York Post Twitter account that originally helped spread the misinformation has posted a correction, and the TwitPic page that has become so popular is now littered with admirers linking to Guzman's official Flickr page. To his now loyal supporters, Guzman says "Thanks, Twitter, for standing up for art.?Opening up Skies is universally attributed to me ? a testament to how supportive this community is."
Check out a full version of?Opening up Skies below (used with permission, of course). If you want to show your support for Guzman's passion, you can view his entire body of work on?Flickr, or even purchase high-quality prints of his photos from?SmugMug.
