The New Buffy Needs a New Screenwriter

Fans who hate the idea of a big-screen revamp (ha!) of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' that doesn't involve creator Joss Whedon, will be pleased to hear that the project has hit a major roadblock: First-time screenwriter Whit Anderson's script "fell far short of expectations," the LA Times is reporting, and it now has been "rejected completely." The Times' Geoff Boucher says that a new writer is being sought, but the remake of a remake "may have lost some steam."

As one insider told him, "If you're going to bring it back, you have to do it right. [Anderson] came in with some great ideas and she had reinvented some of the lore and it was pretty cool, but in the end there just wasn't enough on the page."

Whedon, who's now busy shooting 'The Avengers,' commented last November, "This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths." Being Whedon, he still had a sense of humor, of course, adding, "just because they can't think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself."

As if we need to tell you, 'Buffy' started life as a panned '90s movie starring Kristy Swanson, then -- with Whedon calling the shots -- became a critical and cult favorite TV series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar.
