Philosophy in the Public Interest expands Hot Topics Caf?

Flagstaff AZ (September 1, 2012) ? The Philosophy in the Public Interest (PPI) and the Compassion Project at Northern Arizona University will present more opportunities for Flagstaff and Sedona community members to have civil discussion about timely political issues with a new season of Hot Topics Caf?s.

This year, there will be caf?s at the Museum of Northern Arizona, Coconino Center for the Arts, the Sedona Public Library, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) in Sedona, as well as on campus at the Health and Wellness Building, Green Scene Caf?.

?I think that the tremendous interest in Hot Topics shows that people really do want to have civil discussions about these issues and they want to be able to understand them,? said Andrea Houchard, director of Philosophy in the Public Interest.?? ?Our goal is to bring people together from different sides of the political spectrum who don?t normally come into contact with each other.?

Hot Topics Caf? is a program that creates a forum for civil discourse about timely political topics, chosen by a diverse community committee. These conversations emphasize respect for all persons, and all viewpoints are welcome. The Hot Topics Caf? does not aim to achieve consensus or resolve issues. Hot Topics Caf? supports the mission of Philosophy in the Public Interest by creating opportunities for reflection that lead to positive action in the communities of Northern Arizona.

Hot Topics Caf?s are sponsored by the Arizona Humanities Council.? Other partners include the Museum of Northern Arizona, the OLLI Sedona, and the Sedona Public Library.

The caf?s are free and open to the public.? For more information, visit nau.edu/ppi.?

At the NAU campus, parking is available in Parking Lot P7 and P7A with a $4 evening permit pass.? Parking passes can be purchased in advance at nau.edu/parking, or at the San Francisco permit kiosk.? Free parking is available in Parking Lot P13 after 4:30 p.m.? For a map of campus, visit nau.edu/maps.
