DCIS is ductal carcinoma is situ. It is basically cancer that hasn?t become full blown cancer yet. In other words the cancer is still in the duct and hasn?t left the ductal casing yet. When it is caught this early surgery will completely cure the cancer. Surgery for this cancer means a total cure because the tumor hasn?t become invasive. Congratulations on finding it early! Best of luck!

I?m 44 and was diagnosed with breast cancer back in August (DCIS also). A lumpectomy was done to remove the offending area. As is common procedure, I?m now going through radiation treatment (6-1/2 wks), and after that will have a 2 ? 3 month break before I go on hormone therapy for 5 yrs.
The radiation and hormone therapy are to reduce the risk of recurrence, since my risk of having an issue again is now much higher (without those preventative measures) than for a woman who hasn?t had breast cancer to get it for the first time.
My surgeon and radiation oncologist recommended radiation. My surgeon and my oncologist recommended the hormone therapy. Their recommendations match what I?ve read online re: those treatments being fairly standard even for my (stage 0) cancer.
Good luck to your wife!
