Breast Cancer Stats

1)??? According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control), aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States. It is also one of the leading causes of cancer death among women of all races and Hispanic origin populations.

2)??? About 39,840 women in the U.S. were expected to die in 2010 from breast cancer, though death rates have been decreasing since 1990. These decreases are thought to be the result of treatment advances, earlier detection through screening, and increased awareness.

3)??? Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among U.S. women. More than 1 in 4 cancers in women (about 28%) are breast cancer.

4)??? A woman?s risk of breast cancer approximately doubles if she has a first-degree relative (mother, sister, daughter) who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. About 20-30% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of breast cancer.

5)??? About 70-80% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer. These occur due to genetic abnormalities that happen as a result of the aging process and life in general, rather than inherited mutations.

6)??? The most significant risk factors for breast cancer are gender (being a woman) and age (growing older).

7)??? Only 20% of breast cancer patients have a family history of the disease. A statistic like this means that, for many women, a diagnosis of breast cancer can strike without warning.

Breast Cancer Prevention

1)??? Routine mammograms

2)??? A healthy immune system fueled by some smart diet choices and a little vitamin D can help you prevent breast cancer

3)??? Diet, exercise, green tea, aspirin twice a week

4)??? Early detection tests

Breast Cancer References

1)??? DR. Oz and Breast Cancer

2)??? The Mayo Clinic

3)??? WebMD

4)??? National Breast Cancer Foundation
