Phillips promises book tax relief for students - News - Go-Jamaica

The Finance Minister Dr Peter Phillips says the Government is working on an arrangement with the Education Ministry so that students do not have to pay the impending 16.5 per cent GCT on text books.

Addressing a post budget press conference at Jamaica House this morning, Phillips said under the proposed arrangement, the books would be accessed by the education ministry and made available to the schools.

Phillips has also sought to explain why the Government has not restructured the property tax rates, which are now deemed inadequate.

Among the reasons, he says, the tax year has already started and a rate review could not happen now.

He also says the government is conducting a revaluation of properties which should be completed by December.
