Comments - Structured Settlements 4Real? Blog - Typepad

by John Darer

An annuitant's representative was able to significantly better the commutation offer of the company holding his client's structured settlement, with our assitance,? by shopping around. According to the representative who I reconfirmed the information with today Symetra offered in the range of $25,000 when shopping around resulted in a quartet of offers exceeding $30,000 and the winning bid higher than that.

When a person goes down the road of selling structured settlement payment rights, every dollar often counts. Some people really have no other alternative. Getting more money for selling less could mean a more secure financial future because less is eroded.

The structured settlement commutation programs offered by Allstate and Symetra should be used as? a "pick and roll". Use their rate to set a rate cap. Recently Allstate took a very positive step by lowering discount rate on its Advanced Funding Exchange Notice to 8%. Symetra's is known in the market place to be higher than that.? Any competing bids MUST beat their discount rate. Make sure that you get a rate that is inclusive of ALL expenses and don't stop there. Keep shopping like Mr. P did. { See Reader Uses Structured Settlement Watchdog to Get Better Deal] Note that on any given deal one company could be better than the other.

Some factoring companies don't like it when you shop, others encourage it. Some don't like it when you don't shop in their "mall". Tough, it's your life.

"The World Is a Book and Those Who Do Not Travel Read Only One Page"

"The World Is a Book and Those Who Do Not Travel Read Only One Page"This inspirational quote about travel is attributed to Saint Augustine of Hippo. If for some reason you're delaying on acting on your wanderlust or have been reluctant to travel, remember that travel can be one of the most life-changing experiences of your life.

"The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page" emphasizes that if you never go anywhere, you'll have a very limited view of the world.

Not all of us can travel the whole globe, but just making travel a priority?even to a new place a day's drive away?can be eye-opening. Mark Twain is quoted as saying in The Innocents Abroad/Roughing It:

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

Maybe 2013 will be a great year to put your travel dreams in motion?

The Best Advice For Anyone Focused On Self Improvement ...

The greatest way to help you develop personally is to educate yourself on the subject. There is a vast amount of information available on this subject, so it is in your best interests to take the knowledge you learn here and apply it towards being the best person you can possibly be.

Keep your focus on your inner self instead of your physical appearance. You don?t need to wear the newest fashions or be the hottest. However, the personality you cultivate will be the one thing you are ultimately judged on. Work on improving yourself as a whole person rather than superficial changes.

Leadership is the cornerstone of self improvement. Leadership can be defined in many ways, but most people like to define it as ?influence.? Examine how far you have grown as a leader. Which past events have had major, formative effects on your life? How did these people and events change you as a person? What are the things about you that make you a great fit for a team? Ask yourself these questions in order to see how you will be as a member of a team.

Stress and happiness do not go together. When the human mind is preoccupied with a state of stress, damage can be caused to both physical and mental aspects of the body. If we want to think clearly and strive for our goals with neat, calm purpose, we must eliminate the stress in our minds. Set a time each day to relax, to clear your mind, and be alone. Having this time every day can make you more peaceful and happy with yourself.

Try to read encouraging books. Everyone?s idea of a positive piece of writing is different. It may be a religious bible, or alternatively a book of inspirational quotes. By keeping something around that you can refer to for encouragement, you will be better able to handle all that life throws at you.

When you start your self improvement journey, always remember to focus on the fact that you are worthy of nothing less than the very best in life. Know that you owe it to yourself to do your best. Ultimately, you can be confident that you worked as hard as possible to achieve your goals.

Live according to your principles. Everyone has a set of beliefs that is integral to their identity. If you stay on top of your morals you will have a boost in self esteem and you will have a good base to defend them. Best of all, following your beliefs encourages consistency, and this is a much desired character trait.

Do away with unneeded aggravation in your life. To avoid stress, try to remain calm when something unexpected happens. Accept that there will be setbacks on the way to your goals, and focus on finding solutions to these problems rather than giving up.

Wherever you happen to be, when a great idea strikes your brain, write it down. Take notebook or journal with you, or even make notes on your cellular phone pad. If an idea grabs you while you are on the subway, write it down, then do something about it when inspiration strikes.

Overreacting to a situation will cause you unnecessary stress. Think about the situation, and try to find constructive ways to deal with it. You can usually fix any mistake, or find a way to work around it. Prioritize your achievements over your failures.

Not only is getting organized an achievement in itself, but it will help you to meet other goals faster. Take your major goals, and break them down into small, manageable components. You can then achieve each of these minor goals more quickly. A daily planner, online organizational software, or written journal can all provide great methods for tracking self improvement goals.

Each day should be an opportunity to top the previous day?s accomplishments. Strive for constant and unceasing improvement. In whatever you do, try to do it better than you ever have before.

Maximize your time for personal development to help you get more done. The simple trick is to take more breaks when you work. This may seem like it is counterproductive, but if you take a break you will reduce the amount of stress you have and get more done.

If you see yourself failing to reach goals, then you need to analyze the situation to figure out what the problem is. Find out how others have succeeded at the same thing. It is possible that you may be setting unrealistic expectations, missing an important element, or not devoting enough time or resources to your efforts.

The introduction makes it clear that you need to get educated in order to really develop yourself. You must also be able to apply that knowledge. There are many ways to begin personal growth. Once you start using these tips, you?ll start to feel better about yourself.

P.S.-If you love personal development and would love to make an extra $1000/day blogging with it, find out how my 2 friends are helping thousands of people make money about their passions ===> Discover why this game-changer is the most bad-ass personal development plan in the industry?s history!

How Do I Set Up an LLC With out a Attorney?

Restricted Liability Businesses (LLC) are business entities that got their begin in 1977 and are regarded as to match someplace in between sole proprietors/partnerships, and totally incorporated Businesses. PFT: Bears' Melton expects 'dirty' game vs. Lions

GriffinReuters

Well, it?s officially over.

With an eight-game gap and one week of games left, MDS and yours truly disagree on only five games.? Which means that, even if MDS sweeps, I?ll still be three games ahead.? (Math continues to be my strong suit.)

Of course, if I sweep I?ll finish with a 13-game lead.? And based on the five disagreements, I think I will.

Read on to see our picks and our takes for the final week of the regular season.? It all re-sets to 0-0 for the playoffs, at which time MDS will have a chance to exact revenge.? Or to fail again.

Last week, I was 11-5 and MDS went 10-6.? For the year, I?m now at 157-82-1, good for 65.4 percent.? MDS is 149-90-1, which keeps him at 62.0 percent.

Buccaneers at Falcons

MDS?s take: The Falcons wrapped up home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs, but they say they?re playing to win in Week 17. They shouldn?t have much trouble winning against the Bucs, who have collapsed at the end of the season.

MDS?s pick: Falcons 34, Buccaneers 13.

Florio?s take:? The Bucs haven?t been the same team since they nearly beat the Falcons in Tampa.? The Falcons are still trying to prove that they?re one of the best teams in the league.

Florio?s pick:? Falcons 27, Buccaneers 17.

Jets at Bills

MDS?s take: Football fans, the Greg McElroy-Ryan Fitzpatrick quarterback matchup you?ve all been waiting for is finally here. Fitzpatrick will throw a couple of touchdown passes in what may be his final start in Buffalo.

MDS?s pick: Bills 20, Jets 10.

Florio?s take:? The Jets have folded the tents, even though the circus is still in town.? Buffalo celebrates the news of a new lease with a home win to end the season, just in time for plenty of changes.

Florio?s pick:? Bills 27, Jets 14.

Ravens at Bengals

MDS?s take: At first glance this might look like a big game, matching up two playoff teams. But with the Bengals locked into the No. 6 seed and the Ravens highly likely to end up with the No. 4 seed, neither of these teams has a lot to play for. I think the Ravens, however, will be a little more motivated to build on the momentum from last week?s win over the Giants and will take this one.

MDS?s pick: Ravens 21, Bengals 14.

Florio?s take:? This meaningless game has plenty of meaning for the Bengals, who need to convince themselves that they can beat the Ravens, in order to obtain the confidence that they can do something else they haven?t done in an even longer time ? win in the playoffs.

Florio?s pick:? Bengals 27, Ravens 20.

Bears at Lions

MDS?s take: In 2000, the Lions were 9-6 heading into Week 17 and needed only to beat the 4-11 Bears to make the playoffs. Instead, the Bears pulled the upset and Lions owner William Clay Ford cleaned house and began the disastrous Matt Millen era. This year it?s the 9-6 Bears who need to beat the 4-11 Lions to have a shot at the playoffs. I?ll take the Lions to get their revenge in an upset.

MDS?s pick: Lions 28, Bears 24.

Florio?s take:? Rodney Harrison declared while watching the Lions lose to the Falcons that Detroit?s body language suggests the Lions have quit.? The Bears haven?t.? Sometimes, it?s that easy.

Florio?s pick:? Bears 24, Lions 10.

Texans at Colts

MDS?s take: The Texans are playing for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, while the Colts are already locked into the No. 5 seed in the AFC. Houston has more to play for and is a better team and will win this one going away.

MDS?s pick: Texans 36, Colts 17.

Florio?s take:? The Texans have never won in Indianapolis.? They need it this time more than ever.? But the Colts will have coach Chuck Pagano back, and even if the Colts leave so much on the field that it will make it harder to win in the playoffs, they?ll leave it all on the field to beat the Texans.

Florio?s pick:? Colts 27, Texans 23.

Packers at Vikings

MDS?s take: This is the biggest game played in Minnesota since Brett Favre led the Vikings to a divisional playoff win over the Cowboys three years ago. Unfortunately for Vikings fans, they?re hosting a Packers team that?s peaking at the right time. I like Aaron Rodgers to lead the Packers to a high-scoring win.

MDS?s pick: Packers 35, Vikings 27.

Florio?s take:? The Vikings are playing for a postseason berth.? The Packers are playing for a bye.? The Packers remain the better team, and they have every reason to demonstrate that on Sunday.? To the delight of the Bears.

Florio?s pick:? Packers 34, Vikings 21.

Dolphins at Patriots

MDS?s take: A win probably won?t be enough to earn New England a first-round playoff bye, but the Patriots will be motivated to try ? and to wash out the bad taste of back-to-back disappointing performances, in a loss to the 49ers and a close win over the Jaguars.

MDS?s pick: Patriots 41, Dolphins 14.

Florio?s take:? The Pats still have a crack at a bye.? That?s all the incentive they need to take out the Dolphins for the second time this month.

Florio?s pick:? Patriots 34, Dolphins 17.

Panthers at Saints

MDS?s take: It?s a meaningless game for both teams, but that doesn?t make it a bad game: Both of these teams have been playing good football in recent weeks, despite falling short of the playoffs. I like the Panthers to keep their winning streak going and make a statement that they?re a team to keep an eye on in 2013.

MDS?s pick: Panthers 24, Saints 21.

Florio?s take:? New Orleans is trying to finish on a high note.? And they are succeeding.

Florio?s pick:? Saints 34, Panthers 10.

Eagles at Giants

MDS?s take: The Eagles quit on Andy Reid months ago. The Giants have looked in the last couple weeks like they quit on Tom Coughlin. Both of these teams are slouching toward the end of the season, but the Giants have more to play for.

MDS?s pick: Giants 14, Eagles 10.

Florio?s take:? The Giants are playing for pride, along with a sliver of hope that they could make it to the playoffs if enough other teams lose.? If the Giants find a way in, there?s a pretty good chance they won?t lose again.

Florio?s pick:? Giants 27, Eagles 20.

Browns at Steelers

MDS?s take: This game is meaningless, and I?m tempted to pick the Browns on the theory that the Steelers will be feeling a hangover from their disappointing Week 16 loss. But the Browns have gone in the tank over the last couple of weeks, and at this point I?m not sure I?d pick them to win on the road against anyone.

MDS?s pick: Steelers 17, Browns 9.

Florio?s take:? The Browns haven?t swept the Steelers since 1988, 11 years before the current edition of the Browns was born.? With rampant changes looming in Cleveland, the Steelers still have enough gas in the tank to avoid getting punked by the franchise they?ve owned since 1999 (even though the Browns are now technically owned by a guy who still owns a chunk of the Steelers).

Florio?s pick:? Steelers 20, Browns 10.

Jaguars at Titans

MDS?s take: Last time the Titans suffered a humiliating blowout loss and were called out by their owner, they responded by winning the next game. I think they?ll do it again.

MDS?s pick: Titans 24, Jaguars 14.

Florio?s take:? Bud Adams isn?t happy with his coaching staff.? He?ll be slightly less unhappy after Sunday, but still unhappy enough to clean house.

Florio?s pick:? Titans 27, Jaguars 16.

Chiefs at Broncos

MDS?s take: Knowing they need to win in order to earn a first-round playoff bye, the Broncos will pound the Chiefs, who have nothing to play for other than the first pick in next year?s draft ? which Kansas City will earn by losing.

MDS?s pick: Broncos 27, Chiefs 10.

Florio?s take:? With 10 straight wins each by at least seven points, the Broncos could be the best team in the playoff field.? They?re definitely good enough to continue chasing a bye week.

Florio?s pick:? Broncos 34, Chiefs 10.

Raiders at Chargers

MDS?s take: With Norv Turner virtually assured of being fired after the game, his team will send him out a winner in an AFC West contest that doesn?t really matter for much of anything.

MDS?s pick: Chargers 24, Raiders 10.

Florio?s take:? Norv Turner has one last chance to change the owner?s mind.? It won?t matter.

Florio?s pick:? Chargers 24, Raiders 10.

Cardinals at 49ers

MDS?s take: San Francisco will shake off Sunday night?s thrashing in Seattle to clinch the NFC West.

MDS?s pick: 49ers 28, Cardinals 3.

Florio?s take:? The Niners are on the brink of squandering the NFC West title that we were ready to hand them back in September.? If they can?t beat the Cardinals and Brian Hoyer at home, San Fran doesn?t even deserve to be in the playoffs.

Florio?s pick:? 49ers 31, Cardinals 13.

Rams at Seahawks

MDS?s take: No one wants to play the Seahawks right now. They?re destroying everything in their paths. The Rams will be no different.

MDS?s pick: Seahawks 45, Rams 7.

Florio?s take:? The Seahawks, who lost their first round of NFC West games, have been exacting revenge in a big way.? They finish the job on Sunday.

Florio?s pick:? Seahawks 41, Rams 17.

Cowboys at Redskins

MDS?s take: In the biggest game of the day, the Cowboys will ride Tony Romo and Dez Bryant to a high-scoring win. I suspect that Robert Griffin III is hurting more than he?s letting on and won?t be able to move as effectively as he did in the Redskins? Thanksgiving win over the Cowboys. Dallas will take the NFC East crown.

MDS?s pick: Cowboys 31, Redskins 28.

Florio?s take:? For the second straight year, the NFC East title game returns to prime time in Week 17.? For the second straight year, the home team advances.? For the second straight year, the Cowboys come up short.

Florio?s pick:? Redskins 24, Cowboys 21.

Obesity among young children declines slightly - Health X Pert Articles

The number of young children who are obese and extremely obese is going down, according to new data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In what researchers say is the first national study to show that the prevalence of obesity among young children may have begun to decline, scientists analyzed data from more than 27 million children from low-income families between the ages of 2 and 4?in 30 states and the District of Columbia. "The results of this study indicate modest recent progress of obesity prevention among young children," according to the study published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA ).? It's hard to believe, but more than?one in 10 toddlers?in this country are obese, according to this report.? In 1998, 13% of 2-, 3- and 4-year-old children were obese and 1.75% were extremely obese, according to the new report.? In the following years, those statistics went up.? Obesity and extreme obesity rates peaked in 2003, according the data, says Heidi Blanck, Ph.D., one of the study authors and the Chief of the Obesity Prevention and Control Branch in the CDC's Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity.? In that year, 15.21% of 2- and 4-year-olds were obese and 2.22% were extremely obese. But in 2010, the obesity rates dropped modestly to just less than 15% (14.94%) and extreme obesity dropped a little too, down to 2.07%. "We are cautiously optimistic that the number of obese and extremely obese children is going down," says Blanck. Health experts determine if?an adult is obese?by calculating the height/weight ratio called the body mass index (BMI).? In adults, someone with a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese. Determining if a child is obese is a little more complicated. ?If a child's BMI ?puts him at more than the 95th percentile for age and sex, he is considered obese.? If a child is at 120% or more of the 95th percentile, she is considered to be extremely obese.? Or, as Blanck explains it:? A 3-year-old boy who is of average height (37 and 2/3 inches) and weighs 37 pounds would be considered obese. ?If that same boy weighs 44 pounds or more, he would be considered to be extremely obese. Blanck and her colleagues are cautiously optimistic about their findings because when children are obese, it's really putting them on a path for poor health.? Childhood obesity and extreme obesity are more prevalent among minority and low-income families. While the prevalence of childhood obesity still remains much too high, Blanks says it's important that the "upward trends have turned around" because previous research has shown that childhood obesity tracks into adolescent obesity.? And, depending on which study you look at, 65% to 80% of adolescents who are obese go on to be obese adults. "This really puts them at risk for heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers." This new report doesn't specifically indicate what has contributed to this slight decline in obesity rates,? but Blanck believes an increasing awareness?about childhood obesity among parents, health professionals and communities all plays a role.? She also believes that an increase in breastfeeding among low-income mother may also have contributed.? A 2011 report from the CDC says breastfeeding for nine months reduces a baby's odds of becoming overweight by more than 30%. Since this new CDC study?is focusing on 2-, 3- and 4-year-olds who are obese and extremely obese, Blanck suggests that it's important for parents to be aware of what their child consumes in childcare. According to the CDC, 60% of U.S. preschool aged-children spend at least 30 hours per week in child care. While health officials and schools implemented more mandates for providing healthier food in schools a decade ago, that wasn't the case in childcare settings.?But Blanck says during the?past five years, she's seen more childcare facilities increase activity opportunities and providing more water, less sugary drinks, all things that can help prevent a child from gaining weight. Parents can encourage their children to have water as their first drink of choice (as opposed to soda, juice or other sugary drinks).? They can also ask for better food and drink choices in childcare settings.? Blanck points to part of First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign, which provides tips and support for child care providers , to (in the words of the First Lady) "change the way a generation of kids thinks about food and nutrition," and therefore help reduce the number of obese children in this country. Big Beer, A Moral Market, and Innovation - Barry C. Lynn - Harvard ...

On the surface, America's market for beer has never looked healthier. Where fewer than a hundred companies brewed a generation ago, we can now count more than 2,000, producing a mind-boggling variety of beers. Yet just below this drinker's paradise we find a market that has never been more concentrated. Two giants ? Anheuser-Busch Inbev and MillerCoors ? control some 90 percent of production.

To understand how we arrived at this seeming paradox, and what it portends for the brewer and drinker, our team at the New America Foundation took a look into the past and present structures of America's markets for beer and alcohol. What we found surprised us. The great effervescence in America's beer industry is largely the product of a market structure designed to ensure moral balances, one that relies on independent middlemen to limit the reach and power of the giants.

The story of this market traces back nearly a century, to 1919, when America's citizens passed a constitutional amendment to outlaw the production and sale of alcohol. Americans soon decided, however, that the corruption and lawlessness created by the illegal trade in alcohol were worse than the mere drunkenness they had first targeted. And so in 1933 citizens repealed Prohibition.

Americans then had an opportunity to design an entirely new market system from scratch. The first task was to decide what they wanted from the market. Having concluded that "man can't be made good by force," citizens now aimed at a more traditionally American approach to governance ? which was to seat responsibility in the community and in the individual. The new watchword was "self control."

This line of thinking led citizens to give regulatory authority over this market to the state rather than the federal government. It then led voters in every one of America's 48 states to divide the market into three distinct tiers of activity ? brewing and distilling, wholesaling, and retailing ? and to establish strict prohibitions against vertical integration. The practical goal was to ensure that no producer or seller of alcohol could become strong enough to force its products into the community or onto the individual, as had been the case before Prohibition when powerful "tied houses" were able to steamroll regulators.

For half a century this market structure proved a big success, simultaneously averting the chaos of Prohibition and the besottedness that prevailed before Prohibition. But this began to change in the early 1980s, as radical revisions to antitrust law unleashed extreme consolidation in two of the industry's three tiers. In retail a few giants came to dominate; Costco, for instance, is now America's dominant seller of wine. In brewing, a long series of mergers has reduced the field from more than 48 major brewers in 1981 to two.

Over these same 30 years, however, the middle tier of wholesalers and distributors proved largely able to resist consolidation. These smaller firms ? usually with the strong backing of state regulators ? also did a good job of keeping themselves independent of the super-brewers and super-retailers.

In most consumer goods markets in America today, two or three giants dominate ? think toothpaste, eyeglasses, and soft drinks. New entrants?be it Tom's toothpaste or Vitamin Water ? can find it very hard to keep their independence for long. In large part, this is because most distribution systems ? and even most shelving decisions inside the retailers ? are managed by the giants.

In the beer market, by contrast, new entrants still find more than 3,000 small distributors that have both an interest in promoting new and better products and the means to do so. In this one instance at least, a market designed to yield a particular set of moral outcomes has also proved to be extremely effective at promoting innovation and variety.

Not that America's craft brewers and drinkers should rest content. Our research also revealed that both big beer and big retail have in recent years unleashed a series of attacks on the independence of this middle tier of wholesalers and distributors. Anheuser-Busch, which controls well more than 50 percent of the market, especially has pushed hard for more direct control over distribution. Which means that, absent government action, this fragile marketplace that delivers us so much might soon vanish.

We should also keep in mind that the threat we face is not only to the variety and quality we all enjoy. As we have seen in countries such as the UK, where citizens have allowed big alcohol and big retailers to rule the business, consolidation can also threatens the primary outcome of this market ? the ability of communities and individuals to manage for themselves this ever so extraordinary commodity.

Online Videos: Not Just Made By Amateurs Anymore

If you've noticed that there was more to watch online this past year than old TV shows and puppy videos, you would be right. This year, there was an explosion of professionally produced videos that were made just for the Internet. Sites like YouTube, Hulu and Netflix all produced exclusive new programming in 2012.

Mark Suster, an investor, says this is where the Internet is going.

"People in America watch on average 5.3 hours of television per day," he says. "We know what the future of the Internet's going to be ... It's going to be a great, big video platform."

Suster has bet a lot of money on being right. His venture capital firm, GRP Partners, has invested millions of dollars in companies that create professional online video.

Among those companies is Maker Studios, which garners a total of 2 billion views a month for its talent. Its roster includes online sensations such as Kassem G and Epic Rap Battles of History. This year, it added Snoop Dogg to its lineup.

Suster says his bet on the company is paying off.

"Three-and-a-half years ago there were no employees," he says. "Maker Studios alone now employs more than 300 people."

Suster says next year, Maker Studios is expected to bring in more than $100 million in revenue.

There's a new name for studios like Maker. It's being called a "multichannel network," or "MCN." An MCN is an umbrella for a lot of different producers. It cross-promotes them online and gets ads for the videos on YouTube.

This year saw the launch of some new multichannel networks like MiTu, a bilingual network that focuses on lifestyle topics like recipes, makeup and money management. "I think this has been a transformative year," says its co-founder, Doug Grief.

Grief has spent most of his career in traditional television. He says that until this year, it wasn't really cool among his TV and film colleagues to talk about content for the Internet. But now, says Grief, "everybody in our business in Los Angeles and in Hollywood is talking about, 'Well, what are you doing on the Web?' "

Grief says that since MiTu's launch last April, its videos have been viewed upward of 800 million times. And as much as traditional Hollywood may be talking about online ventures, Grief says MiTu is making new stars out of people who started out making home videos.

"It's really astounding that you have these little cottage industries that are popping up around the world, and the majority of them are women. Many of them are moms and wives, and they're running these quite successful businesses from their homes," he says.

According to Grief, many of these "moms" are bringing in as much as $10,000 a month.

Among MiTu's stars is Cris Ordaz. With her down-home good looks and practical makeup advice, Ordaz has garnered a big audience and a Honda sponsorship.

Another big online player is Hulu. Though Hulu is known largely as a subscription service that recycles old TV shows, this year Hulu launched its first original scripted drama, Battleground.

Andy Forssell, a senior vice president at Hulu, describes it as a funny political drama that wasn't quite right for network TV. Forssell sees the Web as a place to experiment with programming.

"To networks, that just doesn't seem to fit any of the models they have," he says. However, Forssell says Hulu executives thought "it was just a really interesting show and very well done."

Hulu backed five of its own shows in 2012, and it has more coming this year. Netflix the other site known for streaming other people's shows had its first original show this year.

Investor Mark Suster says these Web-based companies realize that is the way forward. "Their future cannot be tied to just aggregating content produced by other studios," he says. "They have to have some original content."

One of the best barometers of Internet videos may be YouTube's top 10 list. Last year, only three of the top videos were made by professionals. This year, seven of the top videos were made by pros.

There are probably a few dog and cat stars who are bummed out about this. But for the rest of us, the year to come may bring more variety to our online menus.

When eating healthy is a disorder | Live Well Nebraska

Ever know someone who seems to have lots of rules about what they will and will not eat? And maybe they follow these rules to a tee. Because of my profession, some people think I am like that, and they?re are surprised when they see me eat a slice of birthday cake or catch me with a dish of ice cream.

The term ?orthorexia? was coined by Dr. Steven Bratman, who was interested in describing his own eating behaviors. It?s the obsession with eating healthy. But unlike say, anorexia, it?s not a diagnosis recognized by the medical community. Orthorexia doesn?t include the obsession with weight or calories.

Instead, it is more associated with self esteem and the ability to adhere to a strict eating regimen. It involves the desire to control food quality and purity, and is often accompanied by the feeling that one?s diet is superior to the ?rest of the world.? It might start out with innocent healthy eating, but this condition can spin out of control when a person starts to take on rigid routines and strict diet ?rules.?

So what?s the difference between eating healthy as a lifestyle and being orthorexic? Eating healthy involves healthier patterns, like eating small meals often, allowing ?balance and a varied diet to prevail. Orthorexia involves an obsession with always eating extremely healthfully and causes people to feel extremely guilty when they go astray.

Ask yourself the following questions to determine if you may be headed in the direction of orthorexia. These are from the National Eating Disorders Association.

  • Do you wish that occasionally you could just eat and not worry about food quality?
  • Do you ever wish you could spend less time on food and more time on living and loving?
  • Does it sound beyond your ability to eat a meal prepared with love by someone else ? one single meal ? and not ?try to control what is served?
  • Are you constantly looking for the ways foods are unhealthy for you?
  • Do love, joy, play and creativity take a backseat to having the perfect diet?
  • Do you feel guilt or self-loathing when you stray from your diet?
  • Do you feel in control when you eat the correct diet?
  • Have you positioned yourself on a nutritional pedestal and wonder how others can possibly eat the food they eat?

If you think you might have a disordered eating pattern or orthorexia, seek help from a mental health professional or registered dietitian specializing in eating disorders.

Worshippers rejoice in Jesus' Bethlehem birthplace

BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) ? Pilgrims celebrate Christmas Day Mass in the ancient Bethlehem church where tradition holds Jesus was born, candles illuminating the sacred site and joyous prayer filling its halls.

Worshippers lined up Tuesday inside the fourth-century Church of the Nativity complex, waiting to see the grotto that is Jesus' traditional birthplace.

Duncan Hardock, a 24-year-old teacher from MacLean, Virginia, says he got to see "both sides of Bethlehem" as he arrived at Manger Square after passing through the separation barrier Israel built to ward off West Bank attackers.

Later, Pope Benedict XVI will deliver his Christmas message from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica to thousands of pilgrims, tourists and Romans gathered in the piazza below. The "Urbi et Orbi" message is traditionally a review of world events and global challenges.

Nearly a third of children diagnosed with food allergies who participated in a recent study are bullied, according to researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Almost eight percent of children in the U.S. are allergic to foods such as peanuts, tree-nuts, milk, eggs, and shellfish.

Nearly half of parents surveyed (47.9 percent) were not aware of the bullyingalthough both the bullied children and their parents reported experiencing higher stress levels and lower quality of life.

The study, titled, "Child and Parental Reports of Bullying in a Consecutive Sample of Children with Food Allergy," appears in the online issue of Pediatrics on December 24. The study was led by Eyal Shemesh, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Shemesh and his team surveyed 251 pairs of parents and children. The patient and parent pairs were consecutively recruited during allergy clinic visits to independently answer questionnaires. Bullying due to food allergy or for any cause, quality of life, and distress in both the child and parent were evaluated using validated questionnaires.

"Parents and pediatricians should routinely ask children with food allergy about bullying," said Dr. Shemesh. "Finding out about the child's experience might allow targeted interventions, and would be expected to reduce additional stress and improve quality of life for these children trying to manage their food allergies." Dr. Shemesh is Director of EMPOWER (Enhancing, Managing, and Promoting Well-being and Resiliency), a program within Mount Sinai's Jaffe Food Allergy Institute. Dr. Shemesh is also Chief of the Division of Behavioral and Developmental Health in the Department of Pediatrics at The Mount Sinai Medical Center.

"When parents are aware of the bullying, the child's quality of life is better," said the senior author, Scott H. Sicherer, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, Chief, Division of Pediatric Allergy, Co-Director, EMPOWER program. "Our results should raise awareness for parents, school personnel, and physicians to proactively identify and address bullying in this population."

The work for the study was supported by the EMPOWER program, a program funded by a generous donation from the Jaffe Family Foundation, that is devoted to understanding and enhancing the quality of life of persons with food allergy.
