Mary Meeker Weighs In On The Facebook IPO: Bankers ?Did The Best They Could?

mary_meeker.03The fallout from Facebook's initial public offering earlier this month continues to play out in the media, but according to some of the most senior players in the financial space, any negative aspects of the social network's stock market debut may not have really been the fault of the company or even the bankers who managed it. The latest big name to offer this opinion is Mary Meeker. In an on-stage conversation at the D10 Conference in Southern California where she presented her latest report on the state of the Internet, the current Kleiner Perkins partner and longtime Wall Street analyst was asked what she would have done differently about the Facebook IPO had she been involved...

University of Calgary computer scientists develop font where numbers look their value

Researchers in the computer science department at the University of Calgary have developed a new font for numbers that represent their relative value. Unlike the usual numeric typefaces, the amount of inkor dark pixelsused for each digit in FatFonts is proportional to its quantitative value.

Miguel Nacenta, formerly a post doc (now an assistant professor at University of St Andrews in Scotland), came up with the idea and worked with Sheelagh Carpendale, a computer science professor and Uta Hinrichs, a PhD student specializing in Computational Media Design.

Nacenta presented the work at the important Advanced Visual Interfaces (AVI) conference last week in Naples, Italy.

The core idea of FatFonts is to align the two aspects of datanumeric value and visual representation. "We use numbers to represent exact data values; but when something more visual is needed then we transform this data into graphs or pie charts," explains Nacenta. "The problem is by transforming data into visuals it makes it more difficult to access the actual data values."

With FatFonts, the amount of ink used for each digit is related to the value of the digit it represents. "The digit '3' uses three times the amount of ink than digit '1,'" says Hinrichs. "When you put FatFonts in a grid, they work like a table where you can read the numbers but also as an image that you can interpret visually."

Scientists can use FatFonts for large numeric data sets where it's important to see both individual data values and an overview of the informationfor example, most data that's represented as a heat map can be represented via FatFonts. "They're particularly interesting to use on large high-resolution wall displays or large posters," says Nacenta, "stepping back provides you an overview image while walking closer to the display reveals the data values."

FatFonts are getting a lot of attention. Beyond academia, artists, designers and typographers are also interested.

"People have started to use FatFonts for their own visualizations and even created their own FatFont types. We have even heard from artists who want to design FatFont jewelry," says Hinrichs. "We are really excited that the idea is spreading and we're hoping that FatFonts will become common in infographics, data representations and posters."

The American Medical Association's Code of Ethics prohibits physicians from prescribing treatments that they consider to be placebos unless the patients know this and agree to take them anyway. But this policy is not clearly the best way to protect or benefit patients, concludes an The American Medical Association's Code of Ethics prohibits physicians from prescribing treatments that they consider to be placebos unless the patients know this and agree to take them anyway. But this policy is not clearly the best way to protect or benefit patients, concludes an article in the Hastings Center Report. A commentary by two AMA bioethicists responding to the article also appears in the journal.

Placebos are commonly understood to be inert treatments, such as sugar pills, that have no pharmacological effect, but the AMA defines placebos more narrowly, as therapies that a physician believes lack a specific pharmacological effect on the conditions being treated. The physician's belief may or may not align with the prevailing medical view of a treatment. "There are borderline and controversial cases, such as acupuncture and antidepressants, in which individual physicians might reasonably disagree with the medical community's consensus about whether a treatment is an active treatment or a placebo," writes Anne Barnhill, a philosopher and bioethicist who is studying social work at Columbia University.

The article cites a recent poll of American internists and rheumatologists that found that a significant number of them admit to giving patients placebos without disclosing the therapies as such. While some placebo use is patently unethical providing a treatment that "has no scientific basis and is dangerous, is calculated to deceive the patient by giving false hope, or which may cause the patient to delay in seeking proper care" other uses of placebos are widely seen as ethical, writes Barnhill.

Some placebos might offer medical benefit to patients with certain conditions, Barnhill notes, and the limited available data suggest that placebos are more effective when presented as active treatments. As a result, she adds, some bioethicists have argued that an undisclosed placebo is the best available treatment for some patients. "If the best available treatment is sometimes an undisclosed placebo," she writes, "then the AMA's policy prohibits physicians from offering the best available treatment in some cases."

In addition to failing to benefit patients, the AMA policy may not meet two of its other goals: protecting patients' autonomy and their trust in physicians. The rationale for requiring physicians to disclose their belief that a treatment is a placebo is that patients need this information in order to give informed consent about whether to take the treatment. Informed consent is essential to patient autonomy. But it is unknown whether patients find this information relevant to their decision-making, Barnhill says, because "there's little data on patients' attitudes toward placebos."

Because of this lack of data, Barnhill also argues that the AMA policy does not help protect patients' trust in physicians. "The AMA seems to assume that uncovering undisclosed placebo use reduces patients' trust in physicians. But this is not a given," she writes. "When they uncover undisclosed placebo use, patients might conclude that their physicians are untrustworthy liars or quacks, or that their physicians do not believe that they are truly sick or, that their physicians are open-minded, cutting-edge, and savvy about mind-body connections."

Barnhill recommends that the AMA consider revising its policy on placebo use. If the goal is to protect patients from harm, safeguard their trust, and respect their autonomy, she says, then rather than requiring physicians to disclose their personal belief about whether a treatment is a placebo, the policy might require physicians to report on the medical community's consensus on the treatment's status.

In the same issue of the Hastings Center Report is a commentary by Bette-Jane Crigger, director of Ethics Policy for the AMA and secretary of the Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs, which wrote its ethical guidelines on placebo use, and Matthew K. Wynia, director of the AMA's Institute of Ethics. Regarding Barnhill's recommendation that the placebo policy be based on professional consensus, rather than individual doctor's judgment, they write, "We'd be tempted to agree but, as in so much of medicine, it isn't clear that a strong consensus is actually possible here." How, they ask, should doctors distinguish between so-called impure placebos medications that have a pharmacological effect on some illnesses but not necessarily for the ones for which they are being prescribed from off-label prescribing?

Crigger and Wynia emphasize that the overarching intent of AMA policy is to encourage physicians to be honest with their patients. "If there is professional disagreement on how or whether a particular pharmacologic agent works, then patients deserve to know that," they write. "If a doctor holds an outlier view, then his or her patients deserve to know that as well.

Wing of the Matigara Zonal Income Tax office in ... - Sikkim NOW!

Sikkim NOW!: Sikkim applicants now required to approach Matigara IT office for IT Exemption Certificates VISHNU NEOPANEY GANGTOK, 27 May: Residents of Sikkim who are exempted under the Income Tax Act, Section 27 AAA, will have to henceforth approach the Tax Deduction at Source (TDR) Wing of the Matigara Zonal Income Tax office in Siliguri for IT Exemption Certificates. The Regional Office of the IT Department at Kolkata, in its meeting with regional heads and Officers In-charge of different districts [Malda, Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Kalimpong] including Sikkim, on 14 May directed the Gangtok office not to issue any more IT Exemption Certificates since this power did not fall in its jurisdiction. Till now, the Aayakar Bhawan at Gangtok, established in 2008, had been issuing the IT exemption certificates. The 14 May meeting resolved that the Gangtok office is mandated to handle only the revenue section for IT assessment. Other tasks like TDS directions and Tax refunds are not delegated to it. So far, because Direct Tax laws were new to Sikkim, the Gangtok IT office was also issuing IT exemption certificates [to Sikkim Subjects and their descendents], for the convenience of the people here, on the verbal direction of senior officials. Direct Tax Laws came into force in Sikkim on 21 June, 2008 and the Income Tax Department is represented here by an Assistant Income Tax Officer. The Ministry of Finance, Tax Department, has set up an office here to manage IT returns in Sikkim. Sikkim is in a transitional phase in terms of Direct Taxes and the Ministry of Finance and Regional IT Office at Kolkata have not yet felt it necessary to set up the other wings in Sikkim. As a result, a large number of people are still unaware of Direct Tax norms like filing of returns, claims and TDS or the importance of PAN and TIN numbers. The Gangtok office has already begun directing applicants the TDS wing of the Zonal Matigara Office, Siliguri for IT exemption certificates. IT officials in Siliguri informed NOW! over the phone that after receiving the exemption application from applicants, the Zonal Office will forward the applications for Regional Office verification and after receiving the IT clearance from Gangtok office, the exemption will be granted by the Regional Office if found appropriate. What is required now for the convenience of the people is for the State Government to approach the Ministry of Finance seeking establishment of other wings of the IT Department in Sikkim.

Egyptians torch Shafiq headquarters as vote triggers violence

CAIRO (Reuters) - An arson attack on the headquarters of one of the two candidates in Egypt's presidential election has marred campaigning for the second round in a vote that has polarized the nation with the choice of an Islamist or Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister.

Protesters set fire to storage rooms and smashed computers late on Monday at the campaign headquarters of Ahmed Shafiq, a 70-year-old former air force chief and Mubarak official, who was confirmed as a run-off candidate after the first round vote.

His rival is Mohamed Mursi, a senior member of the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's main Islamist group which controls the biggest bloc in parliament after an earlier election. The deciding presidential vote is on June 16 and 17.

Mursi, 60, drew support from a disciplined group of backers of the Brotherhood, banned under Mubarak, and Shafiq attracted Egyptians who want a strongman to restore law, order and prosperity after 15 months of turmoil since Mubarak's ouster.

Neither won more than a quarter of votes cast in the first round, leaving an agonizing choice for a sizeable portion of the electorate who backed more centrist candidates and do not want a conservative Islamist or an ex-military officer at the helm.

Thousands of Egyptians took to the streets on Monday night in protest after the results of the first round were confirmed by the election committee. Some held up posters of Mursi with a cross over his face. But most were chanting against Shafiq.

Dozens then marched from the protests around Tahrir Square, where hundreds of thousands played out a drama that toppled Mubarak, to Shafiq's headquarters in the upscale Cairo district of Dokki.

"They seemed to know what they were after and they went directly to the storage rooms and set them on fire using petrol bombs," said Ahmed Abdel Ghani, 30, a member of Shafiq's campaign, surveying a scene of unusable, charred campaign flyers and leaflets scattered on the ground.

The main villa escaped the flames but protesters smashed laptops and computers inside, he said. Daubed on the wall outside the villa were the words: "No to Shafiq, no to feloul," an Arabic word referring to "remnants" of Mubarak's era.

Shafiq has made no secret of his admiration for Mubarak, describing him as a role model after his own father. Protesters threw stones and shoes at him when he voted in Cairo last week.

"We condemn the attack but we still don't know who is behind it and will wait for investigations. But we are continuing our work and path and hopefully all will end well," said one official in the campaign, who asked not to be named.

BLOODY TRANSITION

The flare-up was the latest in an already messy and often bloody transition to democracy since generals took over from Mubarak after a popular uprising forced him out on February 11, 2011. The army has pledged to hand over power by July 1.

Even before the first-round vote, revolutionaries who led the demonstrations that brought down Mubarak had promised to hit the streets if Shafiq progressed in the vote to become president of the Arab world's most populous nation.

Yet any violence could help Shafiq's cause as his strongest card in the race is his promise swiftly to restore law and order, which collapsed after Mubarak's downfall.

Many Egyptians were happy to see the back of Mubarak, yet are now desperate for stability to revive the shattered economy. Shafiq is seen as having the army backing to achieve that.

Both Shafiq and the Brotherhood are now trying to rally support from more centrist voters in the second round. But youth leaders of the uprising fear they would be surrendering their revolution by voting for Mursi or Shafiq and liberals are also deeply uncomfortable with the available candidates.

Liberal and other political groups have often criticized the Brotherhood for being slow to join the anti-Mubarak revolt, acquiescing too quickly to the ruling generals and seeking to dominate the political scene after their parliamentary success.

Mursi's supporters believe Mursi and the Brotherhood, which has a social network with grass-roots support across Egypt, are the best hope for reforming a corrupt state.

"Protests are expected. Not everyone will be satisfied with the result, some will object to it but we hope that the people's choice will be with the revolution," said Fareed Ismail, a senior figure in the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party.

"The situation in Egypt is in a critical and dangerous phase. We must work together so that the revolution isn't lost," he told Reuters.

The Brotherhood denied any role in the attack on Shafiq's headquarters. Other candidates who lost in the first round also condemned the violence.

Hamdeen Sabahy, a leftist candidate who came third in the race and now being courted by the Brotherhood, said in a statement it was the "right of the people to express their opinion provided demonstrations were peaceful".

A Brotherhood source, who asked not to be named, said the Islamist group had prepared a menu of options to tempt rival groups and politicians to its side, including backers of first-round loser and ex-Brotherhood member Abdol Moneim Abol Fotouh.

Until now, fourth-placed Abol Fotouh has called for his supporters to "stand united against the symbols of corruption and oppression" - a reference to Shafiq - but has not explicitly said he would back Mursi.

Like Sabahy, fifth-placed former Arab League chief Amr Moussa, once a favorite, has not backed either candidate.

The ultra-orthodox Salafi Muslim Al-Nour party, which controls the second biggest bloc in parliament and had backed Abol Fotouh, has thrown its weight behind Mursi.

The Brotherhood source said the group has offered: creating a five-member advisory council to advise the president; assigning the posts of prime minister or vice-president to Abol Fotouh and Sabahy; distributing cabinet posts to other parties; and offering compromises on planned laws and on an assembly tasked with drafting a new constitution.

Four candidates complained about the vote conduct but the election committee dismissed all the complaints.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said he was broadly confident about the election process although Carter Center monitors highlighted several irregularities, notably lack of access in the final aggregation of national results.

About Cheap Air Tickets | Best Travel Insurance

Increasingly tight budgets are forcing travelers to look for cheap air tickets. This is true for individuals who travel for leisure and want to spend less on tickets so they have cash once they reach their destination. Businesses that routinely pay for employees to travel also need to pay less for airfare. Corporate budgets have been reduced in recent years because of the economy. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to make sure you save money on your airline tickets.

Plan Ahead

Always try to this. Of course there will be situations when you must make last minute arrangements. Otherwise, you should be able to buy tickets in advance so you get great prices. Try to fly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays whenever possible. Even if you get to your destination early, you will have saved significant money. For most people it is a worthwhile tradeoff ? for a little of your time, you save a lot of money.

Monitor Airfares

There are two ways to do this. You can sign up for electronic newsletters or mobile alerts so you know when new offers, coupons, and discounts are available for your review. In particular, you want to be able to tell when prices increase or decrease so you can plan accordingly. Airlines offer this information directly or, if you prefer, you can sign-up for this service through any site that provides ticket information from multiple airlines.

Do Not Wait

As soon as you find a good deal, take it. It is not necessary to wait and see if the next deal is better. There will always be a better deal. The problem is at some point prices of cheap air tickets will increase again and you may miss your opportunity to save money. It is not always obvious when airlines will increase airfare. The only time you should wait is if you decide to see if you can get a last-minute deal.

Look for Refunds

If you have already purchased your ticket but you notice the final price of comparable cheap air tickets on your flight is much lower, contact the airline and ask for a refund of the difference. Most will honor your request. You may have to do this in person at the ticket counter. You can call the airline directly to find out what their refund policy is or you can check their website for information.

Jamie Lynn Spears Tweets Cute Pic of Daughter

Britney Spears' little sister Jamie Lynn is enjoying motherhood.

Over the weekend, the 21-year-old tweeted some adorable pics of herself and 3-year-old daughter Maddie Briann having fun by the pool.

Here is one of the aforementioned images:

Jamie Lynn Spears, Daughter

"#littlegirls #littlemoments" the former Zoey 101 star wrote, linking to a shot of herself and Maddie enjoying the sun in pink bikinis.

And while Jamie Lynn was only 17 when she and then-boyfriend Casey Aldridge welcomed their little girl, she has no regrets about it.

"Casey was my first love. Since the day I saw him, I just wanted to marry him and be with him forever and ever," she told Glamour.

"I truly believe in safety and birth control as prevention. But like many young girls... I was really scared to go to the doctor."

"I did feel responsible for the young girls and the mothers who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that."

"But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy," Jamie Lynn Spears added. "I hated when [celebrity news tabloids] said that. Everybody is dealt a hand of cards. It was my choice to play them the way I played them. The hateful comments hurt."

Glad it's in the past, JLS. Good luck to you girl.

Seven Ways to Connect at a Business Networking Event With Dean ...

So your going to a networking funtion that you have never been to before (or maybe even one you have) determined to crack the networking code and start building priceless business relationships.? Careful, it?s possible to go to a networking event and not have any ?networking moments.?? Remember it is not just about showering and showing up. ?It?s about connecting with people and finding ways to help them progress.? Here are seven proven strategies for making contact at networking events.

1.? Go it alone.

When attending networking functions, go by yourself or at least communicate to your carpool buddies that you should all fan out.? Moving about a networking event solo encourages people to approach you and makes it easy to mingle and initiate conversations.? It may be more comfortable to have a friend right there with you, but remember: you are there to grow your network, not hang with the people already in your network.?

?2.? Stand near the registration table.?

After you have registered and put on your nametag, take advantage of the many opportunities to make small talk with new arrivals after they have signed in. These are the couple of minutes when most people are alone and interested in someone new to communicate with.? Even something really easygoing like, ?Looks like a good turnout?? is probably good enough to get a friendly conversation started.? Remember that like you, people are there to make new contacts.? And if they are not, they are in the wrong place.?

?3.? Study the tags.

If nametags are preprinted and on display at the registration table, scan the tags of the other attendees to see what opportunities await you.? Here?s something, though I have not tried this myself, Rachel Wood, a top financial advisor in the Boston area who introduced herself to me after one of my CODE Crackers Networking seminars, does something pretty neato.? If she spots a nametag on the registration table of someone she would like to meet, she asks the people manning the table if she can clip a note to their tag saying she would like to meet them.? She swears by it.?

?

?4.? Circle and scan.

Before diving into the event, try circling the room and checking out the nametags for people or companies you definitely want to make contact with while there.?

?5.? Look for people standing alone.

These folks may be nervous, and your initiative will often endear you to them.? Plus, one-on-one networking is the best networking.?

It is hard to join a group unless invited.?

?6.? Sit between people you do not know well.

If the event is a sit-down affair, do not sit by a friend or business associate.? You already know that person!? You might be sitting there a while, so make sure you are going to be sitting by someone you can form a new relationship with.? Plan who you want to sit by, but wait until the last minute to actually sit down so you can keep making new contacts.

7.? Hang out at the food table.?

I know it sounds like I?m joking, but people tend to be easily accessible around food.? Stand near the food table, but not the bar.? People tend to grab their drinks and move away from the bar, but are more likely to linger near the grub.?

As people check out the buffet table, small talk comes more easily. ?That Danish looks good?? is as good an opener as any.? Once they have their hands full, people often look for a flat surface where they can place their plate and beverage.? Take a spot next to them and get to chatting.

Check this out.? Our endorphin levels are higher when we are close to food, which boosts our memory and the chance that we will remember and be remembered.? We humans are a trip, aren?t we?

One quick DON?T

Don?t go to networking functions hungry.??

Eat before you go so you can focus on the person, not the cantaloupe.? If you are hungry, grab a quick bite off to the side, and then mingle.? And don?t talk with your mouth full. (I hope I didn?t need to write that.)

Get Cracking.

Be Progress.

New Test for Breast Cancer Patients to Kick Chemo | TopNews Arab ...

Breast CancerA team from the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Centre has revealed recently that breast cancer patients now do not need to worry as a new test can determine whether or not the disease will recur after treatment.

ICH4 that measures levels of ER, PR, HER2 and Ki67 proteins in tumour in order to predict the risk of recurrence has been developed by the team. The test prevents women from taking chemotherapy taken to cut risks of its reappearance.

It has been found that although a surgery is received by women to take out the tumour, six months of chemotherapy is often recommended following the same to be undergone by them. However, the same is an unbearable treatment and leads to varied illnesses. As per the report, it can cause fatigue, hair loss and nausea and can even lead to infertility in some cases.

While chemotherapy is a costly treatment, the new test is cost-effective too, says the report. Researchers from The Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust said that it picks the risk at an early stage. The test is being expected to be available this year in the UK.

Phillips promises book tax relief for students - News - Go-Jamaica

The Finance Minister Dr Peter Phillips says the Government is working on an arrangement with the Education Ministry so that students do not have to pay the impending 16.5 per cent GCT on text books.

Addressing a post budget press conference at Jamaica House this morning, Phillips said under the proposed arrangement, the books would be accessed by the education ministry and made available to the schools.

Phillips has also sought to explain why the Government has not restructured the property tax rates, which are now deemed inadequate.

Among the reasons, he says, the tax year has already started and a rate review could not happen now.

He also says the government is conducting a revaluation of properties which should be completed by December.

Pivotal role for proteins: From helping turn carbs into energy to causing devastating disease

ScienceDaily (May 24, 2012) ? Research into how carbohydrates are converted into energy has led to a surprising discovery with implications for the treatment of a perplexing and potentially fatal neuromuscular disorder and possibly even cancer and heart disease.

Until this study, the cause of this neuromuscular disorder was unknown. But after obtaining DNA from three families with members who have the disorder, a team led by University of Utah scientists Jared Rutter, Ph.D., associate professor of biochemistry and Carl Thummel, Ph.D., professor of human genetics, sequenced two genes and identified two mutations that cause this devastating disease.

"The ability to convert carbohydrates into energy is critical for people and other organisms to live. But when that process goes awry, potentially fatal health problems can occur," Rutter says. "If we can figure out a way to correct the defects, we might be able to treat the disease."

Rutter and Thummel are senior authors on a study published online in Science Express on May 24, 2012.

The researchers studied two proteins, Mpc1 and Mpc2, which are among a dozen proteins they looked at in fruit flies, yeast, and then humans. They discovered that the two proteins play a pivotal role in the cellular process that produces the majority of ATP, a molecule that is the main source of energy for cells and is essential for people and other animals to live. Rutter and his colleagues also discovered that when Mpc1 and Mpc2 are impaired they cause the deadly and as of yet unnamed neuromuscular disorder. This disorder affects thousands of people worldwide.

To produce ATP, the body metabolizes carbohydrates and converts them into pyruvate, which then typically enters into the mitochondria in cells. Once inside the mitochondria -- a self-contained unit often referred to as a cellular power plant -- pyruvate is consumed in the production of ATP. Rutter and his fellow researchers discovered that Mpc1 and Mpc2 are critical for pyruvate entry into mitochondria. When Mpc1 and Mpc2 are eliminated or mutated, pyruvate cannot enter into mitochondria and ATP is not efficiently produced -- and that's when serious health problems can arise, including the neuromuscular disorder that in its most severe forms is deadly.

The ramifications of this study go beyond the production of ATP and birth defects seen in the neuromuscular disorder. The findings may be useful in understanding some of the metabolic defects associated with cancer and heart disease, according to Rutter. Cancer cells typically don't consume their pyruvate in the production of ATP at the same rate as normal cells. Instead, they convert the pyruvate to lactate. This property of cancer cells is called the Warburg Effect and is named after Nobel laureate and cancer researcher Otto Heinrich Warburg. Some forms of heart disease have a similar problem.

Further study based on the current research may provide important information regarding those diseases, according to Rutter. "That might be the most important outcome of our studies in the long run," he says.

The study's first author is Daniel K. Bricker, a doctoral student in human genetics at the University of Utah. Researchers from Harvard University, and the Laboratoire de Biochimie and the Institut de Genetique et de Biologie Moleculaire et Cellulaire, both in France, also contributed to the study.
