Pregnancy Changes: Psychological | ABIM Home Family Today

In each stage of pregnancy, the pregnant woman is in for an emotional rollercoaster ride and she must adapt to each one. Hormones are considered to play a major role in the different psychological changes. Situations may be difficult for the pregnant woman especially with underlying mood disorders. ?For example, a woman with depression may have her condition aggravated especially at the third trimester or during post-partum as this can be considered as time for the blues. Also, medications like Zoloft may pose a threat to the baby during pregnancy but it cannot be discontinued because a more serious reaction may occur. Birth defects are associated with antidepressants so alternative to Zoloft and other medications are searched.?? ?

Psychological Changes in Stages of Pregnancy

?

First Trimester

In this stage, the pregnant woman is uncertain of her feelings especially if it?s the first time for her being pregnant. She is happy because she is conceiving a child but feels anxious because she doesn?t know what to expect. Feelings of anxiety can turn to fear especially if they keep thinking that they?ll be losing their baby.?The first trimester is a very delicate stage of pregnancy as this organogenesis occurs in this stage and the pregnant couple needs to be as well-informed as possible.

Second Trimester

The woman might feel less anxious around this time but low self-esteem might be felt due to physical changes such as weight gain.

Third Trimester

In the third trimester, the feelings of anxiety are back due to another reason which is anticipation of labour and childbirth. On the remaining 3 months, she worries about what would take place during labour and the child birth itself. Also at this time, fantasizing and role playing by the pregnant couple as parents is most evident.

Post-partum

After child birth, the woman can feel a lot of emotions. She feels relieved that she was able to take on the process of childbirth but is worried on the role of parenthood. Postpartum blues is usually felt by this time and the woman should be closely observed since it can progress to depression. The psychological change may be due to hormones, sudden change in lifestyle and other emotional factors brought about by the situation. Others who have babies with congenital defects such as birth defects caused by Zoloft may feel depressed because they may blame themselves for their baby?s condition.
