Hands on with the Motorola DROID RAZR HD and DROID RAZR MAXX HD

Fresh out of Nokia?s (NOK) Windows Phone 8 press conference earlier on Wednesday, we got to see the latest and greatest Motorola will loose upon the market ahead of the holidays this year. The stars of the show ? the Motorola DROID RAZR HD and DROID RAZR MAXX HD ? are both big steps forward for Motorola fans. Beyond all those capital letters lie two phones that push Android handsets forward in several ways, and although the materials and overall design might not be as exciting as some rival smartphones, Android fans on Verizon Wireless will have two very tempting options this holiday season.

These two smartphones are identical with just two major exceptions ? the MAXX?d version of the DROID RAZR HD includes a monstrous 3,000 mAh battery and 32GB of storage while the MAXXless version includes a 2,500 mAh battery and 16GB of internal storage. There is a difference in thickness as well, of course, but beyond that they?re the same phone.

First things first: The display on these phones is fantastic. Like the Motorola ATRIX HD we recently reviewed, these displays are crisp, clear and the colors are vibrant. It really changes the entire user experience compared to Motorola?s previous-generation smartphones.

The size of these RAZRs is borderline?unwieldy, but the thin profiles make them manageable. The fact that Motorola managed to cram giant batteries along with?4.7-inch 1196 x 720-pixel displays and all the other bells ans whistles included in this DROID duo is pretty remarkable.

In the brief time we spent with these phones, we can safely say that fans of Motorola?s RAZR lineup will be happy with the improvements brought about in the new DROID RAZR HD and DROID RAZR MAXX HD. Those coming from other brands and considering these handsets may find them a bit plasticky compared to handsets like the One X or iPhone, but the pros may indeed outweigh the cons.

Both new RAZRs will launch on Verizon Wireless (VZ) ahead of the holidays and pricing has not yet been announced.
