If Dear Abby can get Alzheimer's anyone can

Last week Pauline Phillips known to all as ?Dear Abby? died at 94. She had Alzheimer?s. She did much to raise awareness of Alzheimer?s for 15 years before she had any symptoms. Alzheimer?s can affect anyone; President Reagan was afflicted with Alzheimer?s. The statistics are staggering; almost every family will be affected by Alzheimer?s or some dementia.
My mother in-law has Alzheimer?s or dementia caused by multiple strokes (we are not sure). Watching as my mother in-law struggles to recognize her sons when we come to visit is painful. I have helped many families who have loved one?s with dementia or Alzheimer?s, yet as I live the Alzheimer?s Journey, I realize that it is easy to deny the early signs, it is hard not to feel guilty that your loved one must live in a facility designed for dementia (even though the care is very good), and you grieve the loss while someone is alive (and I am sure we will grieve again when she is gone).
