Mentor's Trubisky and Fritts, Kirtland's Washington finalists for Cleveland sports award

Mentor's Mitch Trubisky and Justin Fritts, as well as Kirtland's Damon Washington, have provided Northeastern Ohio with plenty of highlight reels in 2012.

The trio will be able to add another highlight to their personal collections on Jan. 24, when one of them will be named the high school athlete of the year by the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards banquet at The Renaissance Cleveland Hotel on Public Square.

Trubisky, Fritts and Washington are the three finalists for the award.

Trubisky started classes at the University of North Carolina last week, a month after he was named Ohio's Mr. Football by the state's Associated Press.

Fritts is a freshman basketball player at Wheeling (W.Va.) Jesuit. This past March he was named Ohio's Mr. Basketball by the state's associated Press.

Washington helped lead Kirtland to a 14-1 record in football this season and was named the Division V offensive player of the year in Ohio.

Three other award-winners will be revealed on Jan. 24, including:

n College Athlete of the Year. The finalists are Kent State's baseball team, Kent State's football team and Akron's men's soccer team.

n Amateur Athlete of the Year: The finalists are Margot Shumway (of Westlake), member of the USA rowing team; Justin ?Harry' Lester (of Akron), member of USA wrestling team; and Tianna (Madison) Bartoletta (of Elyria), member of the USA track and field team.

n Professional Athlete of the Year: Phil Dawson of the Browns, Kyrie Irving and Anderson Varejao of the Cavaliers. Continued...

Other awards have already been decided and will also be presented.

Doug Dieken will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, which honors an individual who has advanced sports in Cleveland through personal or career dedication and achievements.

Molly Miller will be awarded the Courage Award presented by Cleveland Clinic Sports Health which honors exceptional athletes who have faced a medical challenge in his or her life and approached the situation with courage and determination to get back in the game.

The 2012 Horseshoe Casino Cleveland Best Moment in Cleveland Sports will also be recognized.

Chris Wilke, Executive Director of the American Collegiate Hockey Association, will be honored with the Sports Development Gold Medalist Award for providing guidance and support through his hosting of championship events with the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission.

Additionally, the Golden Ticket, which will award one sports fan two season tickets to each of the 2013 Cleveland Browns, Cavaliers and Indians home games, will be drawn live during the Sports Awards.

Scott Van Pelt, ESPN personality, will emcee the event. Celebrities confirmed to attend the 2012 Sports Awards include Jimmy Haslam, Urban Meyer, Don King and numerous Cavaliers, Browns and Indians current and former players.

Silent Auction and cocktail reception begins at 5:30 p.m, with dinner and awards program to follow.
