Hialeah native Michelle Aguirre crowned Miss Florida

Michelle Aguirre, a Hialeah native and Florida International University student, was crowned Miss Florida Saturday night at The Westin Diplomat Hotel in Davie.

Aguirre, 19, will now represent Florida in the Miss USA Pageant in the spring of 2013. She qualified by winning Miss Broward Fair USA.

On Sunday, Aguirre credited her win to the unconventional, but eye-popping red evening gown she wore, designed by Fernando Wong.

?I wanted something simple and sexy,? Aguirre told WPLG-Channel 10, which broadcast the pageant. ?From now on, he?s making all my dresses.?

Aguirre, who is studying elementary education at FIU, was among 73 contestants judged in the categories of personality and interview, swimsuit and evening gown.

Miss Delray Beach, Connor Boss, the first legally blind contestant to compete in the pageant, was the fourth runner-up.

Other finalists included: first runner-up Miss West Broward Jessica Santiago, 22; second runner-up Miss Carnival Miami Damaris Aguiar, 26, and third runner-up Miss Central Florida USA Jaclyn Raulerson.

The pageant draws more than 20,000 applicants and narrows down to about 70 contestants through regional pageants statewide.
