The Daily Press - Ashland, WI > News > AHS ski team feels budget ...

Members of the Ashland ski and snowboard team have been riding high this year. The girls team won the state title at the Wisconsin High School Ski and Snowboard Championships in February. In April, two boys went on to compete at the United States of America Snowboard Association National Meet. However, all their success hasn?t kept the woes of the school?s financial challenges at bay. The Ashland School District is facing a $1.5 million budget shortfall heading into the 2011-2012 school year, and school officials are making cuts to a number of department budgets. As a result, the varsity sport may see a cut of $3,745 and is set to be downgraded to a club sport. The recommendation to cut skiing and snowboarding has team members and parents up in arms.

The Ashland School Board asked Athletic Director Brian Miller to make recommendations on how to cut the athletic co-curricular budget. The athletic department includes varsity sports that are WIAA sanctioned, as well as club sports. Varsity sports have usually been well-funded to pay for uniforms, officiating costs, WIAA fees and a number of other associated costs. In February, Miller recommended downgrading the ski team to a club sport, saving the district an estimated $9,000 in the athletic department budget.
